MLB Player Props for August 8: Blake Snell Has a Favorable Matchup Today

As usual, Monday is a bit slower around Major League Baseball with seven games on the slate and no matinees. Here are today’s player props with MLB odds from BetOnline (visit our BetOnline Review), one of BMR’s top-rated sportsbooks.

Washington Nationals vs. Chicago Cubs

Monday, August 08, 2022 – 08:05 PM EDT at Wrigley Field

What You Should Know

I recommend backing most pitchers against the Nationals at this point after Washington traded away Juan Soto and Josh Bell last week. That lineup is very anonymous/weak now.

The Nats enter having lost five straight, four of those by multiple runs.

Cubs' Prop Bet: Keegan Thompson

  • Over/Under 2.5 Earned Runs Allowed

I’ll be playing the Cubs moneyline tonight for my MLB picks, and I also like a strong outing for pitcher Keegan Thompson (8-5, 3.48 ERA), who has become the team’s unlikely ace.

Thompson entered August with a 2.52 ERA and 1.14 WHIP with strikeouts over his previous 39.1 innings before being roughed up last Tuesday in St. Louis, but Thompson is 5-2 with a 2.50 ERA at home.

Batters are hitting .226 against him at Wrigley compared to .282 everywhere else. This will be his second career appearance vs. Washington and first start. Thompson, a former reliever, earned the win vs. the Nats by tossing 1.1 scoreless innings with 3 strikeouts out of the bullpen on May 18, 2021.

MLB Prop Pick: Thompson Under 2.5 Earned Runs Allowed (-140) at BetOnline

Nationals' Prop Bet: Anibal Sanchez

  • Over/Under 3.5 Earned Runs Allowed

On the flip side, one of the worst pitchers in the National League is 38-year-old Anibal Sanchez (0-4, 7.65 ERA) of Washington.

I’m honestly not sure why the team is even using him instead of giving some kids a chance to show what they might have. Sanchez has allowed at least 4 earned in every start but one.

MLB Prop Pick: Sanchez Over 3.5 Earned Runs Allowed (+125) at BetOnline

Cubs' Prop Bet: Yan Gomes

  • At Least 1 Total Base

Catcher Yan Gomes doesn’t play every day for the Cubs, who have a very good catcher in Willson Contreras, but I expect Gomes in there tonight (with Contreras at designated hitter) because he is 8-for-22 career off Sanchez with 2 doubles, 2 homers, a triple and 8 RBIs.

San Francisco Giants vs. San Diego Padres

Monday, August 08, 2022 – 09:40 PM EDT at Petco Park

What You Should Know

Wow, did the Los Angeles Dodgers put the upstart San Diego Padres in their place or what this weekend? Los Angeles swept the three-game home series by a combined score of 20-4, and the NL West race is officially over.

I’m still hoping that the teams do meet in the postseason as the Padres will be that much better once Fernando Tatis Jr. is back. Even with the additions of Juan Soto and Josh Bell, the Padres haven’t homered during a four-game skid.

Soto walked twice in Sunday’s loss, giving him 469 walks in his career, moving past Ted Williams for the most by any player prior to his 24th birthday. The Padres are scheduled to return to LA in early September. Until then, they will play 19 of their next 21 games against teams with losing records.

"They swept us here," San Diego manager Bob Melvin said. "We did not expect that coming in, and we have to do better. Any way you slice it up, it's not what we were looking for. We've got to go home, get some good games under our belt and get on a roll."

Padres' Prop Bet: Blake Snell

  • Over/Under 7.5 Strikeouts
  • Over/Under 2.5 Earned Runs Allowed
  • To Record A Win?

I do like San Diego to win tonight behind Blake Snell (4-5, 4.16).

If you take out a rough July 14 start at hitter-friendly Coors Field, Snell has a 1.29 ERA in his other five starts since the beginning of July

He dominated the Giants on July 8 at Petco, allowing one run and 3 hits with 11 strikeouts over 6.

Padres' Prop Bet: Juan Soto

  • Over/Under 1.5 Total Bases

It’s lefty Alex Wood (7-9, 4.42) on the mound for the Giants. Juan Soto is 2-for-8 career off him with 2 solo homers. He is 5-for-16 with a double and triple since the trade but yet to go yard.

MLB Prop Pick: Soto Over 1.5 Total Bases (+134) at BetOnline
