Top sportsbooks have released their MLB odds for today’s baseball action. Two games, in particular, interest me as worth investing in:
- Twins vs. Yankees
- White Sox vs. Athletics
For reasons that I will explain, you should play the moneyline for the first game and the run-line for the second. Feel free to parlay both bets at our best sportsbooks in order to maximize your profit.
Minnesota Twins vs. New York Yankees
Thursday, September 08, 2022 – 07:05 PM EDT at Yankee Stadium
Who Starts for Minnesota?
Sonny Gray starts for the Twins today. In his most recent starts, Gray has consistently succeeded in limiting his opponent's run total.
Specifically, he has allowed 2 runs or fewer in each of his last four starts. Going further, he's conceded 2 runs or fewer in seven of his past eight starts.
Sonny Gray's Variety
Gray's pitching is characterized by a unique degree of variety in his arsenal. He does not throw a single pitch more than 28 percent of the time.
This level of variety helps make him unpredictable for opposing batters. The pitch that he does favor most strongly is his fastball.
He also features a sinker and curveball more than 20 percent of the time. Then, rarely or sometimes, he'll mix in a few other pitches.
Heavy movement generally distinguishes Gray's pitches from other versions of these same pitches thrown by other pitchers.
In particular, his curveball and slider, which are his third- and most-frequent pitches, boast heavy degrees of vertical and horizontal movement.
Despite the heavy movement of his pitches, Gray maintains strong command, limiting opponents typically to a single walk.
Gray Against Yankees' Batters
New York's lineup suffers a negative outlook tonight against Gray given the pitches that he throws.
Since falling back to Earth after their incredible start to the season, the Yankees rank 20th in slugging against Gray's favorite pitches from righties.
Who Starts for the Yankees?
Nestor Cortes starts for New York tonight. While Cortes is a profitable pitcher to back, this profitability is primarily a reflection of New York's early-season success.
He was getting a lot of run support of which he has lately been receiving rather little. New York has yet to exceed 3 runs in any of his last four starts.
This lack of run support contributes to the fact that the Yankees have lost three of the last four games in which he started.
Cortes Against Twins' Batters
To be clear, these most recent starts took place back in August. He is coming off the 15-day injured list; his last start took place on July 21.
With so many days in between his last and upcoming starts, it's hard to expect Cortes to be at his best.
Cortes Will Need to Shake Off Any Rust
But even if he were at his best, he merits pessimism tonight because he matches up poorly against Twin batters given the pitches that he throws and the fact that he's left-handed.
Primarily, Cortes favors a fastball, cutter, and slider. These three pitches make up over 90 percent of his arsenal.
The Twins rank 10th in slugging against these three pitches from lefties.

Chicago White Sox vs. Oakland Athletics
Thursday, September 08, 2022 - 09:40 PM EDT at Oakland Coliseum
Who Starts for Chicago?
The White Sox start Dylan Cease tonight. Pertinently to my Best Bet for this game, Cease is by far his team's most profitable pitcher.
Overall, he's yielding +7.30 units. In particular, Cease has been profitable to back away from home.
Chicago is yielding +5.1 units in games in which Cease starts on the road.
Cease vs. Athletics' Batters
Cease enters tonight's game in dominant form that extends beyond his almost-no hitter in his last outing.
He has given up a combined total of 3 hits in his last two starts, which totaled 17 innings.
Primarily, Cease throws a slider and fastball. Both pitches make up almost 85 percent of his arsenal.
His outlook tonight is strong because Oakland ranks 25th in slugging against his favorite pitches from righties.
Who Starts for Oakland?
Oakland starts lefty JP Sears, who has been benefitting from a fortunately low BABIP (batting average of balls in play) and an unsustainably high strand rate.
His FIP (like ERA but factors out fielding) shows that he has been performing much worse than his ERA suggests.
He'll struggle tonight, especially, because he's a lefty, and Chicago owns the ninth-best lineup, in terms of slugging rate, against left-handed pitching.
