Chicago White Sox vs. Seattle Mariners

Monday, September 5, 2022 – 06:40 PM EDT at T-Mobile Park

Who Pitches for the White Sox Today?

Lance Lynn starts for Chicago today.

Pertinently to my best bet for this game, the "Under" has hit in the last three games in which Lynn started.

Lance's strong ability, especially in his most recent starts, to limit his opponent's scoring output contributes to this ongoing "Under" trend. He allowed one earned run in each of his last three starts.

Sluggish in Seattle

While Lynn enters today's game in solid form, Mariners' batters enter this contest in an awful spot.

Because they played in Cleveland yesterday, they have to travel two time zones without a rest day in between.

On top of this already difficult situation, their game in Cleveland ended much later than planned because rain delayed it by 4.5 hours. As a result, Mariners' batters will be grotesquely out of sorts.

Lynn Against Mariners' Batters

While Lynn's most recent opponents weren't exactly the toughest, they all rank better against Lynn's pitches than Seattle does.

In addition to their bad situation, Mariners' batters merit pessimism today because they match up poorly against Lynn given the pitches that he throws.

Primarily, Lynn throws a fastball, cutter, and sinker. These three pitches make up just over 80% of his arsenal. Seattle ranks 24th in slugging against these three pitches from righties.

Who Pitches for the Mariners Today?

Marco Gonzales starts for the Mariners today.

It's good for him that this game starts during the day because he has been a better daytime pitcher this year.

His stronger daytime success contributes to the following trend: the "Under" is 6-2 in games in which Gonzales starts during the day.

Gonzales Against White Sox' Batters

No matter what time Gonzales pitches, he won't face much of a threat from White Sox' batters.

The one that hits him well in over three at-bats, Tim Anderson, is hurt.

Elvis Andrus is the only active White Sox batter with more than a hit against Gonzales, but Andrus had 38 tries and slugs .211 with Gonzales on the mound.

Detroit Tigers vs. Los Angeles Angels

Monday, September 5, 2022 - 09:38 PM EDT at Angel Stadium

Who Pitches for the Tigers Today?

Tyler Alexander starts for the Tigers tonight.

I really don't understand why, but Alexander repeatedly gets disrespected by MLB oddsmakers, who attach high totals to his starts.

Alexander keeps making bettors pay who play the "Over" in starts. Overall, the "Under" is 8-2 when Alexander takes the mound.

Fly Ball Pitcher

Part of Alexander's pitching style is that he is a strong fly-ball-inducing pitcher. He induces ground balls with only 36.5% frequency.

One way he induces fly balls is by elevating his fastball, which is one of his favorite pitches. With an above-average spin rate, this pitch has the appearance of rising action when he locates it high in or above the strike zone, inducing batters to swing underneath it.

Alexander merits optimism tonight because the Angels are worse against fly-ball-inducing pitchers than ground-ball-inducing ones.

Alexander Against Angels' Batters

Moreover, Alexander looks reliable tonight because he matches up well against Angels' batters given the fact that he's a lefty and given the pitches that he throws.

Primarily, he throws a cutter, fastball, sinker, and changeup. These four pitches make up almost 90% of his arsenal.

L.A. ranks 28th in slugging .363 against these pitches from lefties.

Who Pitches for the Angels Today?

Jose Suarez starts for Los Angeles tonight.

One respect in which Suarez differs from Alexander is that Suarez is more dependent on inducing batters to chase his pitches. Suarez ranks in the 70th percentile in chase rate.

This dependency will work out for him today because Detroit is the worst team at stopping itself from swinging at pitches outside the strike zone.

Suarez Against Tigers' Batters

Suarez also matches up well against Tigers' batters in view of the pitches that he throws. He favors a fastball, changeup, slider, and curveball. Detroit ranks 24th in slugging against these pitches from lefties.

In multiple respects, Tigers' batters find themselves in an unpropitious situation today. They've scored 3 runs or fewer in four of their last five road series openers and in five of their last six games overall.
