Tampa Bay Rays vs. Toronto Blue Jays

Thursday, September 15, 2022 – 03:07 PM EDT at Rogers Centre

Who Pitches for the Rays Today?

Shane McClanahan starts for Tampa Bay tonight.

After dealing with shoulder issues that required him to endure a stint on the IL, he is back. Reportedly, he looked sharp in light workouts on the mound, in simulated game action, and in bullpen sessions.

Given these reports, one should expect him to be back in full force, his usual self. Plus, he's obviously going to be fresher than usual.

McClanahan's Betting Numbers

Pertinently to my best bet for this game, McClanahan is a strong "Under" pitcher. The "Under" is hitting in 59.1% of his starts overall.

McClanahan Against Blue Jays' Batters

McClanahan is in a great spot tonight to rediscover his strong form (he allowed 2 runs or fewer in three straight starts in which he endured at least 6 innings before getting injured) because he is playing Toronto. In his career, he enjoys a 2.53 ERA in four starts against Toronto.

One must expect his positive history against Toronto to continue because the Blue Jays rank below-average in slugging against his favorite pitches (the fastball, changeup, curveball, and slider) from lefties despite facing many iterations of these pitches that are inferior to McClanahan's.

Who Pitches for the Blue Jays Today?

Kevin Gausman starts for Toronto today.

Gausman's ERA creates a misleading perception of him. While his 3.31 ERA is good, it masks a superb 2.28 FIP (like ERA but factors out fielding).

Gausman Against Rays' Batters

Primarily, Gausman throws a fastball and split-finger. These are, by far, his favorite pitches. Together, they combine for about 85% of his arsenal.

Gausman merits optimism today because Tampa Bay ranks 23rd in slugging against his favorite pitches from righties.

Expect little from Randy Arozarena, among others. Arozarena is cold, he has one hit in his last 13 at-bats. Normally an important power hitter for Tampa Bay, his outlook tonight would be negative even if his form weren't so poor. He is 0-for-6 in his career with Gausman on the mound.

Philadelphia Phillies vs. Miami Marlins

Thursday, September 15, 2022 - 06:40 PM EDT at loanDepot park

Who Pitches for the Phillies Today?

Newly acquired pitcher Noah Syndergaard starts for the Phillies tonight.

One might think that Syndergaard is enduring a bout of negative form in view of the number of runs that he's allowed in his recent starts.

Before allowing 3 runs in 6 innings in a victory over Washington, he yielded a high ERA against the Giants and Pirates. But, crucially, he yielded a sub-2.50 FIP against the latter two opponents.

In those two starts, he yielded a BABIP (batting average of balls in play) that was unfortunately high given the success with which he limited hard contact.

Syndergaard Against Marlins' Batters

Syndergaard faces an ideal opponent tonight because historically he thrives in Miami. He enjoys a 2.47 career ERA in eight starts in the Marlins' venue.

His pitching arsenal (he throws a sinker, slider, changeup, fastball, and curveball with between 10% and 30% frequency) will serve him well tonight.

Besides struggling, in general, to score runs in their games, especially recently, Miami batters merit pessimism tonight for ranking 27th in slugging against Syndergaard's pitches from righties.

Who Pitches for the Marlins Today?

Pablo Lopez starts for Miami tonight.

Lopez is not the pitcher he was to start the season. While his FIP was 1.66 in March/April, it has remained over 4.00 in August and September.

Lopez Against Phillies' Batters

Even if Lopez hadn't regressed in quality, he looks unreliable tonight because Phillies' batters match up well against him in view of the pitches that he throws.

By far, Lopez relies on his fastball and changeup. He throws each pitch over three times as often as any of his other pitches. Together, they form about 75% of his arsenal.

Phillies' batters enjoy a strong outlook tonight because they rank seventh in slugging against Lopez's favorite pitches from righties.
