The New York Mets and Colorado Rockies will play a doubleheader on May 21 after Colorado snowed in yesterday.

With cold temperatures on the horizon, how will the second gameplay out between two pitchers who have been good lately?

Let’s see what the MLB odds tell us at the top sportsbooks!

Mets vs. Rockies: May 21 Doubleheader

The New York Mets and Colorado Rockies were snowed in yesterday. Therefore, the Mets and Rockies will play a doubleheader with the first game starting at 03:10 PM EDT.

We’ll be talking about the second game of the doubleheader that starts at 08:40 PM EDT. This is the matchup that would’ve taken place anyway today.

The Mets are currently 26-14 on the season and have the best record in the National League. Meanwhile, the Rockies are 18-19 and looking to get back over .500 with two wins tonight.

We’ll see how the first game plays out. But I’m looking to make money on the second game. Here are my betting picks and predictions for the Mets vs. Rockies' second game on May 21.

The Pitching Match-Up

The New York Mets have been dealing with injuries. The Mets won’t have Tylor Megill, Max Scherzer, or Jacob deGrom anytime soon.

Trevor Williams' Performance

Therefore, Trevor Williams has stepped up.

  • Williams is 0-2 with a 4.20 ERA to start the season. However, he’s not a no-name pitcher.
  • He’s a starter with experience and a starter with success at the big league level. In the last 30 days, Williams has had a 3.48 xFIP with 24.6% of strikeouts along with 3.5% of walks.
  • It’s not the biggest sample size, but Williams has gone 7.2 innings without allowing a run.

Austin Gomber's Performance

Meanwhile, Austin Gomber will take the hill for the Rockies.

  • The left-hander has a 2-3 record with a 4.38 ERA.
  • However, he’s been better than that in the last 30 days, with an xFIP of 23%. He’s struck out 23% of batters in that same timeframe with 52.5% of ground balls.
  • He’s also allowed just 17.5% of line drives.

Gomber has been excellent in the last 30 days in a lot of areas.

Who Has the More Favorable Lineup?

With tonight’s game being a doubleheader, lineups could vary and change. But we’ll go off what we’d expect.

The Mets haven’t hit lefties all that well this season. In the last 30 days, the Mets projected lineup has a .163 ISO and wOBA of .278.

You can basically thank Brandon Nimmo for these higher averages. The Rockies, on the other hand, have a .170 ISO and wOBA of .324 but are hitting 49.3% of ground balls in the last 30 days while smacking only 19.1% of line drives.

With this game being the second game of a doubleheader, in the cold, the offenses likely won’t be shining bright.

Mets vs. Rockies: Game Prediction

The Rockies groundskeeping crew needs to make sure the field is fine after all the snow yesterday. If the first game is played, we’ll know more about the conditions for the second game.

But it can’t be exciting for major league baseball players to play in this weather. This game will likely be quick.

We’ve got two pitchers on the mound who have xFIPs below 4 in the last 30 days going up against lineups that have seen better days before.

How Is the Weather Forecast for Today?

There might be a little bit of rain in the forecast and it’ll be under 50 degrees when the first pitch is thrown. Umpires won’t want to be out there long and the players likely won’t either.

To me, this is going to be a low-scoring game. Williams has kept power numbers down recently and the Mets don’t have much power against lefties in the last 30 days, to begin with, other than Brandon Nimmo.

Mets vs. Rockies: Who To Bet On?

Therefore, I’ll rock with under 10 in this game. I know this game is at Coors Field but with this kind of weather, it won’t make a difference.

These two teams have to play a game before this one and then they’ll get tightened up, cold, and probably a bit tired as well.

For your MLB pick, grab under in the Mets vs the Rockies. It’s the second game of the two.
