Who wants it more? Let’s see what the MLB odds tell us at the top sportsbooks!

New York Mets vs. San Diego Padres

Wednesday, June 08, 2022- 09:40 PM EDT at Petco Park

Game 1 Recap

The San Diego Padres defeated the New York Mets, 7-0, in yesterday’s game.

Since the Mets won the first game of the series, tonight, we’ll have a rubber match between these two elite ball clubs.

The Mets were dealt some injuries in last night’s game and will more than likely be without Pete Alonso and Starling Marte in the series finale.

Does that mean the Padres have the advantage, at home, against the Mets for the rubber match? Here’s our pick for the Mets and Padres game.

Ex Teammates Matchup

Sean Manaea of the Padres and Chris Bassitt of the Mets will take the hill tonight. These two were teammates in Oakland and will now face each other for the first time.

Who Pitches for the Padres Today?

This should be interesting. Sean Manaea, a lefty, has a 2-3 record but an ERA of 3.77 on the season. In the last 30 days, he’s been right on par, with an xFIP of 3.69.

He’s also striking out 28.8% of batters in the last 30 days. Walks can get a bit high for Manaea, but overall, he’s been very good for the Padres who needed pitching depth this season.

Who Pitches for the Mets Today?

On the other hand, Chris Bassitt has a 4.66 xFIP in the last 30 days despite having a 3.74 ERA on the season.

Bassitt is struggling to earn ground balls at a high rate and is giving up 21.7% of line drives in the last 30 days. Like Manaea, Bassitt’s walks can get a bit high too.

Mets Lineup Analysis

  • The Mets more than likely won’t have Marte or Alonso in the lineup. Therefore, the lineup now has a .105 ISO and wOBA of .320 in the last 30 days against lefties.
  • The Mets are still smacking 27.4% of line drives against lefties with this lineup and have struck out only 19.1% of the time.

Padres Lineup Analysis

  • There’s reason to believe the Mets can string together some base hits and score some runs. On the other hand, the Padres’ projected lineup only has a .132 ISO and wOBA of .283 in the last 30 days.
  • The Padres have struck out 23.4% against righties in that same time frame and have only earned 6.2% of walks. Neither lineup is really standing out in tonight’s game.

Mets vs. Padres: Game Prediction

Bassitt has been very bad against lefties in the last 30 days, allowing a wOBA of .418 and an ISO of .373.

However, there are no powerful lefties in the Padres lineup that are hitting righties for consistent power right now.

What to Expect from Both Pitchers?

Only Trent Grisham has a .161 ISO against righties from the left side. Bassitt should be able to escape damage in this game as he’s dominated righties lately.

Meanwhile, Manaea has allowed a .188 ISO to righties. Only Eduardo Escobar has a high ISO and wOBA against lefties from the right side in the Mets lineup in the last 30 days.

Therefore, both pitchers will more than likely have quality starts in tonight’s game. Both lineups aren’t very appealing.

The Mets are without two huge bats while the Padres don’t have any high-power lefties in the lineup.

The lefties in the lineup include Jurickson Profar, Eric Hosmer, Nomar Mazara, Jake Cronenworth, and Trent Grisham, but again, none of these bats have hit righties at a consistent rate lately.

MLB Pick for Today

With that said, I like the under in this game between the Mets and Padres. Manaea only has to worry about Eduardo Escobar and Bassitt doesn’t really need to worry about anyone in the Padres lineup.

Luke Voit is the only righty killer in the Padres lineup in the last 30 days. For the Mets, Brandon Nimmo has had success against lefties, it’ll be hard for him to have much success against Manaea, who is also a lefty.

Who to Bet On?

The two former teammates should put on an exciting pitching duel tonight. Neither lineup stands out while both of these pitchers have pitched pretty consistently throughout the year so far.

Let’s take the under for our MLB pick of the day.
