The New York Yankees will look to be the first team to reach 70 wins on the season. They’ll invite the Seattle Mariners to town in what should be a very exciting matchup and series. Can the Yankees run away with the first game of the series?
Seattle Mariners vs. New York Yankees
Monday, August 01, 2022 – 07:05 PM EDT at Yankee Stadium
What You Should Know
The Yankees will begin a new series at home against a red-hot Seattle Mariners team that will, unfortunately, be without Julio Rodriguez as he’s currently on the injured List.
Anyway, the Mariners believe they can really make noise in the MLB postseason and just acquired Luis Castillo from the Cincinnati Reds. The Yankees were in on Castillo as well, but the Mariners paid a higher price. Castillo won’t be pitching in tonight’s game but he will get the start against the Yankees later in the series.
This series should be an exciting one between two teams that will more than likely be in the playoffs when the regular season concludes.
Who Is Pitching for the Mariners Today?
Marco Gonzales will get the start for the Mariners in the first game of the series. Gonzales has a 5.73 xFIP in the last 30 days while only striking out 9.6% of batters faced.
On the season, Gonzales has a 6-10 record with a 3.66 ERA, however, he hasn’t been nearly as good as his ERA, especially in the last 30 days.
The left-hander has struggled more against righties, giving up a .385 wOBA and ISO of .165 in the last 30 days. Still, lefties have a .182 ISO against Gonzales in the last 30 days.
Who Is Pitching for the Yankees Today?
It’ll be Domingo German getting the start for the Yankees tonight. German has a 0-1 record with an 8.22 ERA on the season.
He’s only pitched in two games this season, but in those two games, German has allowed a 5.55 xFIP with over 30% of line drives.
German has literally given up more line drives than ground balls induced in his first two games back on the MLB mound.
- The Mariners haven’t performed well against righties in the last 30 days.
- Seattle has a .277 wOBA against righties as a projected lineup in 30 days and just a .123 ISO with their projected lineup as well.
- Adam Frazier has the highest wOBA of the Mariners in the last 30 days against righties with a .314 number.
- Carlos Santana, meanwhile, has a .254 ISO against righties, making him the biggest threat against German.
New York Yankees
- The Yankees have been lights out against lefties in the last 30 days, hitting a .225 ISO and wOBA of .409.
- New York has struck out just 13.7% of the time with their projected lineup.
- That should be good news going up against Gonzales, who rarely gets strikeouts, to begin with.
Mariners vs. Yankees: Game Prediction
Yankees' Batters Against Gonzales
The Yankees will feature a ton of batters that have crushed lefties recently. D.J. LeMahieu has a .250 ISO and wOBA of .426 in his last 20 plate appearances against lefties.
Aaron Judge is having an MVP-like season with a .533 ISO and wOBA of .611 against lefties in the last 30 days. Even left-hander Anthony Rizzo has succeeded, hitting a .455 ISO and wOBA of .479 in his last 15 plate appearances against lefties.
The powerful hitting continues with Gleyber Torres and Isiah Kiner-Falefa, both hitting inflated ISO numbers against lefties. Aaron Hicks has a .443 wOBA against lefties in the least 30 days.
Andrew Benintendi was the new big addition for the Yankees, but he’s a lefty that hasn’t shown much potential against other lefties lately. He’s still going to make contact and walk, so his wOBA is still high against lefties.
Gonzales Against Yankees' Batters
On the other hand, Domingo German hasn’t impressed in his first two starts. But against the Mets, strikeouts started to come as he got more comfortable on the mound.
The Mariners don’t strike out at a ridiculous pace but have a low wOBA due to their low line drive rate as a projected lineup.
If German is going to limit line drives against the Mariners, he’ll have a solid outing and get his first win of the season.
MLB Betting Pick for Today
The Yankees at -180, at home, looks solid. But I’m not going to test my luck with German just yet. I’d rather take the Yankees bats.
Therefore, for my MLB picks of the day. I’m riding with the Yankees Over 2.5 in the first 5 innings at -120.
