Guardians vs. Yankees Game 2 Analysis
The New York Yankees will look to hold their ground in Game 2 of the ALDS. The Yankees defeated the Guardians in the first game of the series and will look to go up 2-0 in a best-of-five series against the Guardians tonight.
This game could be postponed to tomorrow due to rain. But for now, the game is on. Maybe we’ll get lucky, and they’ll play some baseball tonight.
The Guardians haven’t had much offense in the postseason, scoring just 4 runs in three games. That will have to change if the Guardians want to move on to the ALCS.
Here are our MLB picks and predictions for the ALDS Game 2 between the Cleveland Guardians vs. New York Yankees.
Who Starts for the Guardians?
The Cleveland Guardians will send out Shane Bieber for tonight’s contest.
Bieber already pitched a game in the postseason, and it was a thing of beauty against the Rays in the Wild Card Series.
Bieber finished the regular season with a 13-8 record with a 2.88 ERA. He also has a 3.05 xFIP over the last 30 days with just 1.6% of walks.
He’s struck out 21.7% of batters in that time frame and has induced nearly 55% of ground balls while limiting line drives and fly balls.
Bieber vs. Yankees' Batters
Lefties have hit a .164 ISO against Bieber in his last 56 plate appearances against them.
Anthony Rizzo and Oswaldo Cabrera both have hit for power against righties in the previous 30 days from the left side.
The Yankees have some potential, but they’ve also struck out 25.7% of the time as a projected lineup.
That’s not good going up against Bieber, who is more than capable of racking up the strikeouts.
Who Starts for the Yankees?
Meanwhile, it’ll be Nestor Cortes on the mound for New York. He’s a left-handed pitcher for the Yankees, who finished with a 12-4 record and a 2.44 ERA.
In the last 30 days, Cortes has had a 3.66 xFIP with 32.2% of strikeouts. His walks can get high, but he’s allowed a BABIP of .196 over that same time frame.
Cortes has also kept line drives under 20% and continues to limit hard contact.
He’s also limited wOBA and ISO over the last 30 days and rarely allows extra-base hits. He’ll take on a Guardians lineup that rarely hits extra-base hits.
Cortes vs. Guardians' Batters
The Guardians have 4 runs in three games in the postseason. They’re hitting a .108 ISO against lefties over the last 30 days and have a .288 wOBA with just 4.5% of walks.
This same lineup has also hit 53.3% of grounders against lefties over the last 30 days and has hit under 25% of fly balls.
The Guardians aren’t a threat against Cortes or any pitcher, for that matter. Only Oscar Gonzalez has a high ISO against lefties, which is .237.
However, the bottom of the order is getting on base at a higher rate, with Owen Miller, Andres Gimenez, and Myles Straw hitting a wOBA of at least .343.
Guardians vs. Yankees: Prediction and Pick
It’s hard to trust the Guardians and their offense. With Bieber on the mound, the expectation is that this game goes under the total. Bieber might allow some power to lefties. But if he does, it’ll likely be a solo home run to Anthony Rizzo or Oswaldo Cabrera.
He’s limited walks and gets a high rate of ground balls, so he won’t be pitching with many runners on base in this game.
On the other hand, Cortes will walk players here and there, but the Guardians have not been patient at the plate. They’ve also been lacking power at the plate and rarely hit fly balls against lefties.
Therefore, I’ll take the Under 6 at +100. I’ve got the Yankees winning, but this game could easily be 1-1 and head into extra innings. I don’t want to get against Bieber, despite him having slightly worse numbers than Cortes analytically in terms of their matchup.
MLB Pick: Nestor Cortes Over 3.5 K’s (-180) at BetOnline
