The Los Angeles Dodgers and San Francisco Giants get back to work after the All-Star Break, opening a four-game series at Dodger Stadium, the site of this year’s Midsummer Classic festivities. Let’s see what the MLB odds tell us at the best sportsbooks!
San Francisco Giants vs. Los Angeles Dodgers
Thursday, July 21, 2022 – 10:00 PM EDT at Dodger Stadium
The Story So Far
The two teams have combined to win the last 10 National League West titles—eight by the Dodgers—and 13 of the last 14. That streak will likely be extended this year, but the weekend series will go a long way to determine if there’s a divisional race down the stretch. The Dodgers have won 11 of 12 and four straight heading into the break to open up a 10-game lead in the division.
After sweeping the Dodgers in three games in San Francisco five weeks ago, the Giants went 4-14 to drop out of a Wild Card spot and behind the Padres, into third in the West. The Giants bounced back with a 7-3 mark over their last 10 pre-break games, including a current three-game winning streak.
With the trade deadline less than two weeks away, the Giants are teetering on the brink of contender and pretender, which could determine whether they are buyers or sellers at the deadline.
Work to Be Done
With the surprising news that Washington Nationals superstar Juan Soto is expected to be traded, Giants observers and fans have been speculating on which package of San Francisco products could land him.
The team has more pressing issues this season, however, including a defense that has ranked near the bottom of MLB in most categories all season long after being among baseball’s best last year.
The defense likely took another blow when shortstop Brandon Crawford went to the injured list just before the break, less than two weeks after he returned from an injury that cost him nine games last month. Brandon Belt has also been playing on a knee that needed to be drained over the break.
The Giants’ bullpen has also been shaky this season. Both flaws were on display the Friday before the break as the pen gave up the lead in the fifth inning, and two errors led to three unearned runs. San Francisco rallied in the ninth to get the win, but it was far from good feelings about the team’s prospects for repeating as West champs.
The Giants will start Carlos Rodon in Thursday’s series opener. The left-hander was scratched from the All-Star team with blisters and a split nail on his pitching hand, but he is expected to be well enough to pitch on Thursday.
The last thing Los Angeles wanted to do was take a three-day break. The Dodgers are 15-2 in their last 17 games and will likely be looking at postseason matchups rather than the divisional race as they decide what pieces to add at the trade deadline.
“Pretty special first half for the Dodgers,” said Freddie Freeman. “Sixty wins is a lot of wins in a first half. We've been playing pretty good baseball of late. Sometimes you don't want the All-Star break to come, but I feel like we could use the rest.”
Freddie Freeman has won the NL Player of the Week twice in the last four weeks and has reached base 20 times the last 29 he’s come to the plate. In the last month, he has a 1.122 OPS with nearly an RBI a day and 21 extra base hits. He also had five multi-hit games in his last six before the break.
The Dodgers will start right-hander Mitch White, who is 1-2 with a 4.20 ERA. He gave up 10 hits and six runs in five innings against the Cardinals last time out.
The Dodgers swept a two-game series over the Giants in Los Angeles earlier this year, meaning that the home team is 5-0 in this rivalry so far this season. Thursday would likely be the Giants’ best shot of snapping that string, with Rodon on the mound against White, who started the year in the bullpen. I'll take the Giants in a high-scoring game with my MLB picks.
