San Francisco Giants vs. Los Angeles Dodgers

Saturday, July 23, 2022 – 07:15 PM EDT at Dodger Stadium

The Story So Far

The Los Angeles Dodgers used another late rally against the Giants to win their second game of a four-game series over the San Francisco Giants, 5-1.

The Dodgers are now 62-30 on the season and just pushed the Giants closer to .500, where they now sit at 48-45 on the season.

Los Angeles is pulling away with the NL West, but the Giants can still split the series with two wins over the weekend.

Will the Giants be able to get back in the win column tonight? Here are our MLB picks and predictions for tonight’s game between the Giants and Dodgers.

The Pitching Matchup

It’s the battle of lefties tonight. Alex Wood will take the hill for the Giants. Wood has a 6-7 record along with a 4.20 ERA. However, in the last 30 days, he has had a 3.15 xFIP along with 27.1% of strikeouts and 3.1% of walks.

Wood has also induced 52.3% of ground balls and has given up just 20% of line drives in the last 30 days. He’s also kept the power down from both sides and hasn’t allowed a high wOBA to either side either.

Meanwhile, it’ll be Julio Urias on the mound for the Dodgers. Urias has an 8-6 record with a 2.89 ERA on the year. Urias has an xFIP of 3.63 in the last 30 days while earning 29.6% of strikeouts in that time frame.

Urias won’t get a heavy amount of grounders like Wood, but he does limit line drive contact at the same rate.

Who Has the More Favorable Lineup?

The Giants have a .307 ISO and wOBA of .420 as a projected lineup against lefties in the last 30 days. However, the Giants faced a left-hander last night and scored one unearned run in six innings.

So take this how you want to take it. But the Giants usually destroy lefties and have just two players hitting a below-average ISO number against lefties in the last 30 days.

Meanwhile, the Dodgers have had their success against lefties too. The projected lineup for Los Angeles has a .170 ISO and wOBA of /349 with nearly 25% of line drives hit.

The Dodgers have done well working out walks but have a lineup that will strike out at a high rate, especially against Wood.

The Pick

Therefore, you can guess where I’m going with this game. Both pitchers check out nicely. Wood and Urias have low xFIPs, high strikeout rates, and have limited walks.

Neither pitcher should really have to escape runners on base in this game and that will help them keep the damage low. With my MLB Play of the Day, I’ll take the Under 7.5 at +100. Pitching always beats hitting in my book.
