The Chicago White Sox look to get back .500 Wednesday evening when they are underdogs at home on baseball betting boards against the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Los Angeles Dodgers vs. Chicago White Sox

Wednesday, June 08, 2022 – 08:10 PM EDT at Guaranteed Rate Field

It certainly wasn’t a stretch before the season began – at least according to the MLB futures – to imagine a World Series pitting the Chicago White Sox against the Los Angeles Dodgers, something that is still possible despite only one of the teams currently playing like a postseason contender.

The two sides continue their series in Chicago on Wednesday when Los Angeles sends Tony Gonsolin (6-0, 1.59) to the mound on the Windy City’s South Side as -175 chalk at BetOnline, while veteran Johnny Cueto (0-2, 2.92) is up for the White Sox with 8½ the scoreboard target.

Dodgers vs. White Sox Game 1 Recap

Michael Kopech spun 1-hit, shutout baseball in the series opener, striking out eight baffled L.A. hitters along the way, and former Dodger AJ Pollock ignited a big inning for the White Sox who won their third in a row with a 4-0 decision as small home ‘dogs in the matchup.

Los Angeles saw its lead over San Diego in the NL West reduced to 1½-games with its third consecutive setback, and Chicago gained another game on Minnesota in the AL Central where the White Sox and Cleveland are both 4-games back of the Twins.

Rivalry History, and Trends

Tuesday’s tilt was the first time the clubs met since 2017 when the Dodgers and White Sox played a pair of 2-game, home-and-home sets. Los Angeles won all four of those contests while the totals split 2-2 O/U.

  • With the win on Tuesday, Chicago has a 17-15 advantage over L.A. in regular-season interleague action.
  • Tuesday marked the fifth time in the last seven meetings for under bettors to return to the pay window.
  • Los Angeles dropped to 4-2 this season in interleague play following the loss in the series opener while Chicago improved to 4-1.

Tony Gonsolin Analysis

Consistency has been the key to Gonsolin’s success so far in 2022. He has gone six innings in each of his last four starts, doing so with between 89 and 92 pitches in those outings, and the Dodgers have won seven of his 10 assignments on the year though that has only translated to break-even for those following Gonsolin on the baseball odds

Only twice this season has Gonsolin allowed more than three hits in one of his starts, and his 0.88 WHIP would rank fourth in all of baseball if he had a couple more innings under his belt to qualify for the leaderboard.

Gonsolin was at the Single-A level when the Dodgers last met the White Sox in 2017, and Wednesday is his first interleague start since serving as the opener in a couple of games during the 2020 World Series. He is 2-0 with a 2.25 ERA in five road starts this campaign.

Johnny Cueto Analysis

Part of our free MLB picks lineup last week when he faced the Blue Jays, Cueto is still looking for his first dubya in 2022. The veteran was charged with four runs – 3 earned – in Chicago’s 8-3 setback, two of them scoring on Teoscar Hernandez’s home run, the first long ball Cueto has allowed this season.

Three of Cueto’s four starts have been on the road, and his lone assignment at Guaranteed Rate Field was a bit of a disaster as the Cubs hit him around pretty good for a 5-1 upset as +130 underdogs in the Windy City rivalry.

Cueto faced the Dodgers often the last six years while pitching for the Giants, and shut them out for 5+ innings last July in a 5-0 San Francisco win as a small home ‘dog, and Justin Turner has been successful facing Cueto in the past, batting .375 (15-40) with a couple of homers.

Umpire Notes and Trends

Crew chief Jerry Meals will be the umpire at the dish for the middle game of the series. Closing in on the 30th anniversary of working his first MLB game, Meals is 5-3-1 O/U/P this season with his two plate assignments sporting 8½-run marks splitting the totals at BMR's top-rated books

Dodgers vs. White Sox Betting Pick

Rain is in the afternoon forecast, so bettors need to get an update since that could lead to the start of Wednesday night’s game when temps will be in the upper-50s along with a mild NNW breeze (out to right-center).

It’s tough to keep a good lineup – like the Dodgers have – down two games in a row, and Gonsolin is pitching well. But I’ll shy away with a moneyline play and go with the ‘under’ instead.
