The Los Angeles Dodgers travel south down I-5 to begin a big weekend matchup on Friday’s baseball betting calendar against the San Diego Padres.

Los Angeles Dodgers vs. San Diego Padres

Friday, April 22, 2022 – 09:40 PM EDT at Petco Park

The MLB futures pegged Los Angeles and San Diego to be in a three-team fight with San Francisco for the NL West title once again. The big surprise so far has been the Colorado Rockies as they’ve joined the Dodgers, Padres, and Giants in a tight quartet that begins the weekend separated by only 1½-games.

The Dodgers and Padres are meeting for the first time in 2022 this weekend in San Diego, one of six series between the division foes and one of only two matchups before the All-Star Game with the other set for LA at the end of June. The starting pitchers for Friday’s series opener are Julio Urias (0-1, 3.86) and Nick Martinez (0-1, 4.50).

LA’s Lux Questionable on Friday

Both clubs had Thursday off in advance of this weekend set. The Dodgers are favored on a -162 moneyline at Heritage Sports (visit our Heritage Sports Review) for Game 1. Each side has strong ‘under’ tendencies over the first couple of weeks, and Friday’s scoreboard target has been set at 8 and priced to the ‘over.’

The Dodgers just wrapped up a 3-game series in Los Angeles against the Atlanta Braves, those two reprising their 2021 NLCS. The hero in Game 1 and Game 3 wins of the set was former Atlanta star Freddie Freeman who homered in each victory. The 2020 NL MVP will now try to solve some hitting woes at Petco Park where Freeman is 4-26 (.154) with a homer since the start of 2019.

Urias suffered from a little ‘altitude sickness’ in his season debut at Coors Field, surrendering six runs (3 earned) while only managing to get six outs in a 9-4 loss. The bespectacled southpaw bounced right back with five innings of 1-hit shutout baseball in his subsequent outing, a no-decision for Urias but a 5-2 win at home for the Dodgers.

The 25-year-old faced the Padres three times last season, going 2-1 with a 3.37 ERA across 16 innings. A true road warrior in 2021, Urias went 13-2 with a 2.71 ERA in 18 assignments away from home.

Martinez Looks to Bounce Back from Loss

The Padres head into the weekend series with a 4-game win streak and coming off a sweep of the Cincinnati Reds earlier this week. The San Diego mound corps limited the Reds to just three runs in the broom job, while Manny Machado and Jurickson Profar provided pop in the lineup that crossed the pay station 16 times.

The pitching staff has compiled a 3.15 ERA, which is good enough for fifth overall in the National League but only third-best in the West Division. The Padres are about to have to adjust their rotation and bullpen due to the impending return of Mike Clevinger, and that could mean that Martinez heads to a relief role after this matchup with the Dodgers.

Martinez spent the last four seasons in Japan before turning a 10-5, 1.62 ERA showing in 2021 into a 4-year, $25+ million deal with San Diego. The former Fordham star was knocked around by the Braves last Saturday, serving up three home runs among seven hits in his five innings of work. The Florida native will be facing the Dodgers for the first time in his career.

‘Under’ Prevailed in 2021 at Petco

The Padres are probably pleased that most of the matchups with the Dodgers take place in the second half of the season when San Diego should have Fernando Tatis Jr. back in the fold. The talented shortstop injured his left hand in the offseason, requiring surgery and leaving him on the sidelines until at least late June.

The Dodgers have totally dominated this rivalry by winning 11 consecutive season series and going 133-68 (.661) against the Padres since the start of the 2011 campaign, including the playoff sweep in 2020. The matchups at Petco Park a season ago went 5-4 to the Dodgers while the totals ran 3-5-1 O/U/P at online betting sites in those contests.

The climate crazies will be out in full force on this Earth Day, which will find cloudy skies and cool temps in the upper-50s at game time. There will also be an 8-12 WNW breeze (left to right) at Petco Park. While the ‘sky is falling’ nutjobs are running around today, I’ll be making two MLB picks on this series opener on the ‘over’ and the underdog.
