The Los Angeles Dodgers will take the best record in the National League and the best run differential in baseball into Arizona to face the surprising Diamondbacks in a four-game weekend series starting Thursday.

Here is all you need to know for your MLB picks.

Los Angeles Dodgers vs. Arizona Diamondbacks

Thursday, May 26, 2022- 09:40 PM EDT at Chase Field

Dodgers vs. Diamondbacks: Winning Expectations

L.A. has won nine of its last 11, including a four-game sweep in Los Angeles that dropped the Diamondbacks to three games below .500.

The Diamondbacks hope things go differently against the Dodgers in the desert. They did last month when the D-Backs won two of three against Los Angeles.

Arizona has won five of six since getting swept at Dodger Stadium and is back above .500, despite being in fourth place in the brutally tough National League West.

The turnaround is impressive, considering that Arizona is coming off of a year when it tied the Orioles for the worst record in MLB.

Diamondbacks Analysis

One reason the Diamondbacks started winning again after the sweep in Los Angeles is they were playing bad teams.

  • Arizona won three of four against the Cubs, who are seven games below .500, and swept a pair from Kansas City, who is 14-28, tied for the second-worst record in baseball.
  • Arizona is 15-7 against teams with a losing record, including winning 13 of its last 18 against losing teams.
  • Against teams over .500, like the Dodgers, Arizona is just 8-15, and the Diamondbacks haven't beaten a winning team in May.
  • They lead the National League with 60 home runs, although the team would rather not.

The Diamondbacks can credit a power surge and a strong bullpen for their turnaround.

“I don’t want to say that’s what we are,” manager Torey Lovullo said. “I don't want us to be known as a home run-hitting team. I want us to be known as good hitters who hit home runs because we are balanced.”

Diamondbacks Injury List

Arizona got back catcher Jose Herrera, who was activated from the COVID injury list before the last game.

The D-Backs hope for a good report on third baseman Josh Rojas, who has missed the last three games with a hand injury.

Who Starts For the Diamondbacks Today?

The Diamondbacks will open the series with Humberto Castellanos on the mound. He’s 3-1, with a 4.29 ERA but is at 3.32 in May with 18 strikeouts and just three walks in the last 21.2 innings.

Dodgers Analysis

  • The Dodgers have been hot all season, but Los Angeles suffered a power outage in its last game, losing 1-0 to the Nationals.
  • It’s the first time since last August that the Dodgers have been shut out. It was also the first time they’d lost to the Nationals since the 2019 postseason.

The Dodgers have been trying to hold their starting pitching rotation together despite a spate of injuries in recent weeks.

Dodgers Injury List

Los Angeles was without Cody Bellinger in the starting lineup for a second straight day. He’s been suffering from a non-COVID illness. He was able to pinch-hit late in Wednesday’s game, however.

Los Angeles has used nine different starting pitchers this season, but the Dodgers have had seven different starting pitchers start in the last 11 games.

Is Heaney Going to Play on Thursday?

Andrew Heaney is expected to throw a bullpen on Thursday and could be ready to return after that, a week after he was declared “weeks away” from coming back.

Heaney won’t help the Dodgers on Thursday, however, as the team turns to Mitch White to make his second start of the year.

He gave up three runs in 2.1 innings against the Phillies on May 21, his first start after five relief appearances this season. He has just five starts in 29 career MLB games.

Dodgers vs. Diamondbacks: Picks and Predictions

Thursday’s series opener might be the best chance for the Diamondbacks to beat the heavily favored Dodgers, with Los Angeles on the road and going with essentially a bullpen game.

The pick here, following the MLB odds, is for a Dodgers win, with plenty of scoring, as the Los Angeles offense returns with a vengeance after a one-game absence.
