Two of the winningest teams in National League history renew their rivalry on Tuesday’s baseball betting slate when the Los Angeles Dodgers pay the St. Louis Cardinals a visit.

Los Angeles Dodgers vs. St. Louis Cardinals

Tuesday, July 12, 2022 – 07:45 PM EDT at Busch Stadium

Crucial Series for Both Teams

It was a one-game, do-or-die situation when they met in the National League Wild Card Game last October, and while the loser won’t see their season come to an end in this week’s series, it remains a crucial matchup for the Los Angeles Dodgers and St. Louis Cardinals.

With so much rich history between the clubs, a couple of hurlers whose futures are still very much ahead of them are Tuesday’s probable pitchers as Mitch White (1-1, 3.38 ERA) is on tap for LA and Matthew Liberatore (2-1, 4.74 ERA) is up next for St. Louis.

Mitch White Pitching Notes

A second-round pick out of Santa Clara University in 2016, Mitch White established himself as a viable big-league pitcher last season for the Dodgers in 21 appearances, and is now trying to establish himself as a bona fide starter as he prepares for his eighth consecutive starting assignment.

White is also looking to make it through a full six innings as a starter for the first time. He came within an out of doing so last week against the Rockies, a no-decision for him with 5.2 frames to his credit and just a single unearned run allowed in LA’s 2-1 triumph as huge -300 chalk at BetOnline (visit our BetOnline Review).

St. Louis got two looks at White a season ago. The first was a scoreless inning of relief in Los Angeles where he struck out three batters. The other was a September start at Busch Stadium where the Cardinals handed White a 5-4 loss.

Matthew Liberatore Pitching Notes

Part of our free MLB picks schedule last week when the Cardinals were in Atlanta, Liberatore didn’t figure into the decision but did factor into an eventual 3-2 St. Louis win by hurling shutout baseball and allowing just three hits over the first four innings (74 pitches).

That was a huge improvement over his previous outing. Liberatore was lit up in Philadelphia for five runs before getting all the way through the third inning. St. Louis had staked the rookie to a 5-0 lead in the first and needed to rally for a 7-6 victory.

Liberatore is not only facing the Dodgers for the first time in his career, Tuesday’s start will be his first ever against a team from the NL West. The southpaw has yet to be scored upon at Busch stadium with 10 innings of shutout baseball across a pair of assignments.

Rivalry Notes and Trends

Between them, the Dodgers and Cardinals have won 43 National League pennants and made 63 appearances in the postseason, and if not for the silly 2020 season when the Wuhan flu brought life to a halt, this would be the 131st-straight season for the two old rivals to meet on a diamond.

It would be difficult – indeed, impossible – to find a more even rivalry among teams that have met at least 2,000 times. St. Louis has the all-time edge at 1,047-1,045, that record including playoff encounters (1985, 2004, 2009, 2013-14, 2021).

  • The Dodgers and Cardinals have split their last 28 regular season matchups, 14 wins apiece.
  • The teams split a four-game set at. last year at Busch Stadium where totals ran 1-2-1 O/U/P at the best sportsbooks.
  • Los Angeles will host St. Louis at Dodger Stadium in late-September.

Today’s Odds and Best Bet

On what should be a warm, but otherwise nice evening for baseball in Arch City – mid-80s at first pitch, clear skies and 5-7 mph north breeze (in from left) – the Dodgers are showing up around -140 on BMR's MLB odds with an 8.5-run total that favors the ‘over’ at most shops.

Los Angeles had Monday off before starting this road trip to allow Dodger Stadium to be polished up in advance of next week’s All-Star Game, and the Dodgers are red hot with seven straight wins to begin this journey.

St. Louis was really struggling last week, especially on offense, but the Cardinals recovered in time to earn a split in a four-game set with the Phillies on Monday with a 6-1 decision that gives them a modest two-game win streak.

Having a rested bullpen should favor Los Angeles on Tuesday, coupled with the fact St. Louis has been struggling to push runs across the dish. Los Doyers are the right play in this one, 5-4.
