Los Angeles Dodgers vs. Atlanta Braves

Friday, June 24, 2022 – 07:20 PM EDT at Truist Park

The Dodgers will look for revenge against the Atlanta Braves after last year’s playoff appearance ended short with a loss to the Braves in the NLCS.

The Dodgers are currently 43-25 on the season while the Braves are sitting at 41-30 on the year. Both of these teams are well on their way to another playoff run this season.

How will the first game of the series play out in Atlanta? Here are our picks and predictions for tonight’s game between the Dodgers and Braves.

The Pitching Matchup

The Dodgers will send out left-handed pitcher Julio Urias, who is 4-6 with a 2.56 ERA. That’s a weird stat-line, proving that Urias hasn’t been given much run support this season.

Anyway, in the last 30 days, Urias has had a 4.54 xFIP with 7.8% of walks. However, he has also earned 27% of strikeouts and has kept line drives down to 17.3% in the last 30 days.

Meanwhile, Ian Anderson will get the call for the Braves. The right-hander has a 6-3 record with a 4.35 ERA. In the last 30 days, he has had a 4.37 xFIP with 10.1% of walks. However, he’s also earning 23.5% of strikeouts and has induced over 52% of ground balls in those last 30 days.

Who Has the More Favorable Lineup?

Atlanta has crushed lefties. It doesn’t matter how good of a lefty that lefty is. The Braves’ projected lineup has a .259 ISO and wOBA of .390 in the last 30 days against lefties.
The Braves pounced on Alex Wood earlier when they faced the Giants and now get to take on Urias. Atlanta has seven players hitting a wOBA of at least .364 against lefties in the last 30 days.

On the flip side, the Dodgers have a .143 ISO and wOBA of .308 against righties in the last 30 days. However, Los Angeles has kept ground balls down to 35.9% with their projected lineup in the last 30 days and has hit 21.5% of line drives against righties in those 30 days.

Game Prediction

Urias has been getting beat by lefties as of late. The left-hander has allowed an ISO of .250 to his last 25 lefties faced but other than that, he’s been escaping trouble. Strikeouts are lower to righties and walks are higher to righties, giving the Braves a higher chance of putting the ball in play and making good things happen.

Urias has a .214 BABIP, which is going to be hard to sustain against this red-hot Braves lineup, that absolutely smacks left-handed pitching.

On the other hand, Anderson has really struggled against righties as a right-handed pitcher. Righties have a .334 wOBA and ISO of .227 against Anderson in his last 73 plate appearances against righties.

The Dodgers haven’t destroyed against righties lately but still, have a lot of potential with most of the lineup hitting a low amount of grounders and a high amount of line drives. Six of the nine batters in the Dodgers lineup are hitting at least 21.7% of line drives against righties in the last 30 days.

The Dodgers have been playing a lot of high-scoring games lately and tonight seems like another game that could reach multiple digits yet again.

The Pick

The Braves, again, are dominating left-handed pitchers this season. Urias has had his ups and downs but ultimately, even with an ERA below 3, he’s already lost six games this season. That’s pretty telling.

Meanwhile, Anderson has struggled against righties and is allowing lefties to get on base at a higher rate than righties in the last 30 days. I’ll take my chances with the over 9 for the MLB pick of the day.

The Braves and Dodgers are both hitting plenty of line drives, minimizing ground balls, and walking at a high rate. On top of that, both pitchers, despite having solid seasons, still have high xFIPs in the last 30 days and could eventually see some decline.

Final Score Prediction: Braves 7, Dodgers 5
