Los Angeles Dodgers vs. San Francisco Giants

Tuesday, August 02, 2022 – 09:45 PM EDT at Oracle Park

What You Should Know

The Los Angeles Dodgers came into Oracle Park and defeated the San Francisco Giants, 8-2, in the opening game of a new series.

The Dodgers have had the Giants’ number all season, especially in the second half of the year. In the second half, the Dodgers are now 5-0 over the Giants and can now reach 70 wins on the season with another win tonight.

Who Is Pitching for the Giants Today?

It’s going to be the battle of lefties tonight. Alex Wood will get the start for the Giants, with a 7-8 record and a 4.11 ERA on the season.

Wood has a 3.20 xFIP in the last 30 days with 26.9% of strikeouts and 4.8% of walks in that time frame.

He’s earned 54.3% of ground balls and has limited line drives to 18.6%, which is also very good.

Who Is Pitching for the Dodgers Today?

On the other hand, Tyler Anderson will get the call. Anderson is currently 11-1 on the season with a 2.61 ERA.

However, he hasn’t pitched nearly as well in the last 30 days, as he’s holding a 4.39 xFIP with just 18.8% of strikeouts.

Anderson has still been able to keep power down on both sides of the plate and like Wood, has limited line drives while earning 46.6% of ground balls.

Lineups Analysis

San Francisco Giants

  • The Giants are smacking lefties with a .269 ISO and wOBA of .387 in the last 30 days.
  • The Giants are striking out nearly 24% of the time in the last 30 days against lefties, despite all of the quality analytic numbers they’re putting up in the ISO, wOBA, and BB% categories.
  • The Giants have six batters hitting an inflated ISO and also have six players hitting a high wOBA against lefties in the last 30 days.
  • Day after day, the Giants face a lefty and still struggle to score runs.

Los Angeles Dodgers

  • The Dodgers have been just as good against lefties, hitting a .254 ISO and wOBA of .363 in the last 30 days.
  • Only Will Smith and Austin Barnes have struggled against lefties with power.
  • Smith still has a .419 wOBA against lefties and is a major threat regardless of his lack of power.
  • The Dodgers have also hit just 30.9% of ground balls against lefties and have knocked 22.2% of line drives against lefties as well with their projected lineup.

Dodgers vs. Giants: Game Prediction

Who Has the Better Pitcher?

On paper, the Giants have the better pitcher analytically. However, no matter what, the Giants have struggled game after game, despite these great analytical numbers.

Wood has had a 3.20 xFIP in the last 30 days with nearly 27% of strikeouts. Yet, he’s 7-8 with a 4.11 ERA on the season. Meanwhile, Anderson is 11-1 with a 2.61 ERA on the year, but he has a 4.39 xFIP in the last 30 days with just 18.8% of strikeouts in that time frame.

Baseball is a funny sport. But Wood has certainly been the better pitcher.

Who Has the Better Lineup?

When it comes to the lineups, the Dodgers figure to get some hard contact out of their righties between Mookie Betts, Trea Turner, Will Smith, Hanser Alberto, and Trayce Thompson.

Anderson won’t give up as much hard contact, but he’ll likely get fewer strikeouts. Righties like Austin Slater, Yermin Mercedes, Wilmer Flores, and David Villar should have success hitting the ball hard against Anderson.

MLB Betting Pick for Today

With all of that said, I like the way Wood has pitched more than Anderson. I wouldn’t be shocked if this game went either way, but I do think it’ll be a close one throughout with two solid lefties on the bump.

The Giants are currently underdogs in tonight’s game, at home, after falling below .500 again. But for my MLB picks of the day, I’m going to take the Giants +.5 in the first five innings at -130.

To me, at home, the Giants have value with Wood on the bump.
