Memorial Day weekend is upon us, and we’re looking for the winning MLB pick on Friday when the Los Angeles Dodgers continue a long series in Arizona against the Diamondbacks.

Los Angeles Dodgers vs. Arizona Diamondbacks

Friday, May 27, 2022 – 09:40 PM EDT at Chase Field

MLB Standings

Los Angeles owns the top record in the National League, and the Dodgers are sitting at the top of the NL West standings which is exactly where the MLB futures odds told us they would be. Arizona is treading water with a .500 record, meanwhile, and lagging 8-games behind LA.

The long road trip for the Dodgers that started off in Philadelphia is coming to a close this weekend in Arizona, and if the performance by the Dodgers' hitters on Thursday night is any indication, it’s going to be a rough few days for the Diamondbacks and their hurlers.

Today's Pitchers

Los Angeles will shuffle its rotation up a bit by sending rookie Ryan Pepiot (0-0, 3.86) out to the mound in Phoenix. Arizona counters with veteran lefthander Madison Bumgarner (2-2, 2.76).

A late decision by the Dodgers led to the Friday contest not making the overnight boards at the best sportsbooks and betting sites. Tony Gonsolin had been originally listed as the Dodgers’ starting pitcher with LA priced around -185 on the moneyline.

That chalk should lighten up a bit once the oddsmakers put their heads together, and we should expect a 9-run total for the matchup.

What Happened in Game 1?

The Dodgers opened the series with a lopsided 14-1 decision on Thursday, much of the damage done by the top of the LA order where Freddie Freeman and Mookie Betts combined for 7 of the team’s 24 hits and 6 of the runs. Freeman drove in five with a homer and 2 doubles among his 4 hits.

Los Angeles now owns a 6-2 record against Arizona this season and has won the last five matchups after sweeping a long series at Dodger Stadium just before beginning this road trip.

The Dodgers have dominated the Diamondbacks by winning 30 of the 37 clashes since the start of the 2020 campaign.

Ryan Pepiot Analysis

The decision to move Gonsolin back a day in the rotation was decided before the Dodgers arrived in Phoenix following their 1-0 loss to the Nationals in Washington on Wednesday, they just didn’t alert the media to the switch.

Pepiot is being recalled from Triple-A Oklahoma City to make this start, just his third big league assignment and second in a row against Arizona.

He was a pretty fat -220 favorite on the MLB odds when facing them 10 days ago in Los Angeles, the former Butler star not factoring into the decision that saw the Dodgers put up a big number late for a 7-6 victory.

Madison Bumgarner Analysis

Bumgarner’s only start against the Dodgers this season came against Gonsolin in Los Angeles nearly two weeks ago, the veteran lefty taking the loss with 5 innings and 3 runs allowed, all of those runs coming home during the fateful fifth inning.

That outing was followed by a matchup last weekend at Wrigley Field. Bumgarner gave Arizona 7 good innings with his only mistakes being back-to-back homers by Frank Schwindel and Patrick Wisdom, though he didn’t factor in the decision that went to the Diamondbacks as +120 underdogs at BetOnline (visit our BetOnline Review) in 10 innings.

Bumgarner has been very stingy at home this year with a 1.86 ERA in his four starts at Chase Field, but Arizona only has a 2-2 record to show for it. He has done well overall against current LA hitters, Justin Turner owning the most experience (19-75, .253) against Bumgarner with 4 HR.

Who Will Be the Umpire?

DJ Reyburn is set for his ninth plate assignment of 2022, and the first eight have run 4-3-1 O/U/P in the totals column.

The Michigan native has shown no tendencies in recent years at Chase Field where his last four times to have dish duty resulted in an even 2-2 O/U split.

What Is the Roof Report for Today?

With the sun bearing down and sending the thermometer into triple digits, we can count on the roof being closed at Chase Field.

Dodgers vs. Diamondbacks Betting Pick

We can count on plenty of offense Friday night in the desert, with a lack of command by Pepiot combining with a deep lineup on the Los Angeles side to produce something along the lines of a 7-5 final in Game 2 of the set.
