The Los Angeles Dodgers still have the best run differential in baseball and are tied for the best record in the National League. That’s despite losing the last two series, matching the total they’d lost all season long up until last week.

After dropping two of three in Pittsburgh, Los Angeles returned home and lost three of four to the Phillies, giving up 33 runs in the four games. The Dodgers still have the best ERA in baseball, despite the Phillies teeing off all weekend.

Now the Dodgers host one of the teams that took a series from earlier this season—the surprising Arizona Diamondbacks, who will face Los Angeles for four to start the week.

The D-backs are looking to remain above .500. Arizona enters play at 18-17 and in fourth place in the tough National League East. The Diamondbacks lost two of three at home to the Cubs over the weekend, their first series loss since April 24.

Diamondbacks' Pitcher Situation

The Diamondbacks’ pitching staff got a boost with the return of Sean Poppen. The right-hander is 1-0 with a 1.50 ERA on the season, but he’s been on the injured list with shoulder inflammation. He was activated on Sunday.

Poppen only has one career save, however, so it’s unlikely he’ll be able to help address one of the biggest problems on the staff.

Mark Melancon allowed all four batters he faced to reach base, with three scoring as he blew another save over the weekend. He’s given up 10 runs on 11 hits in 3.1 innings over the last week and could be in danger of losing his job.

“I want to sleep on it tonight,” manager Torey Lovullo said of the closer role. “I want to think about some things that happened tonight. I’m pretty emotional and frustrated, as we all are. I don’t think right and deal well with things when I’m in this state of mind."

Madison Bumgarner will be tasked with trying to put the game away before the bullpen gets it. The veteran left-hander is off to one of the best starts of his career at 2-1 with a 1.78 ERA. He hasn’t beaten the Dodgers since September of 2017 and is below .500 against them at Dodger Stadium.

Dodgers' Current Form

The Dodgers had given up more than 5 runs in a game exactly once all season, in the third game of the year, at Coors Field. Then the Phillies came to town.

Philadelphia scored 9, 12, and 8 runs to win the first three games of this weekend’s series. That was more than the Dodgers had allowed in their previous 12 games, combined, in the month of May.

Los Angeles hadn’t lost when scoring 7 or more runs since April 25 of last season before the Dodgers did it on back-to-back days against Philly. They saw their ERA increase by close to 0.70 over the series.

The Dodgers came back from down 4-0 to salvage the last game of the series, and their hitting appears to be picking up steam. Despite being loaded with big names, the lineup has seen plenty of slumps early this season. Mookie Betts is hitting just .254, Max Muncy .150, and Justin Turner .205.

Los Angeles gets things started against Arizona with Tony Gonsolin, who is 3-0 with a 1.33 ERA this season. He’s already faced the D-Backs once this season getting a no-decision in a game the Dodgers lost to Arizona.

The Diamondbacks scored 3 runs off of him. Gonsolin has given up just 2 in his other five starts, combined. He pitched five scoreless to beat the Pirates last time out.

Diamondbacks vs. Dodgers: Betting Picks

The Dodgers got things on the right track on Sunday, but the team’s pitching is still looking to find its footing again. If the Diamondbacks are going to beat Los Angeles, it will be with Bumgarner on the mound.

Following the MLB odds, take Arizona as a big underdog in a game that will go over, despite the marquee mound matchup.
