Cubs vs. Yankees: Today's Pitchers

There will be some happy reunions between many of the Chicago Cubs players and current New York Yankees first baseman Anthony Rizzo prior to the start of their Friday matchup in the Bronx where the two teams meet for a weekend series.

Once those reunions are over, it’ll be time to get down to business with Wade Miley (1-0, 3.38) expected to be activated from the injured list to start for Chicago.

On the opposite side, Luis Severino (4-1, 2.95) starts for the Yankees, who are showing up -235 or higher on the moneyline at the MLB odds. with 8½ for the total.

It has been a little more than five years since the Cubs and Yankees got together, and more than eight years since Chicago’s North Side squad visited The Bronx.

New York has won the last four meetings, including a clean sweep as the underdog on the baseball odds in all three games of their 2017 series at Wrigley Field.

  • In the 2017 clash in Chicago, two of the three games went ‘Over’ the totals as the Yankees outscored the Cubs 19-12.
  • ‘Under’ bettors were rewarded in both games during the short 2014 series at Yankee Stadium, where New York pitchers blanked Chicago hitters in each contest.
  • The Cubs have never won a game at Yankee Stadium, going 0-5 in regular-season interleague play and losing all four games in New York during the 1932 and 1938 World Series.

Wade Miley: Pitcher Analysis

After missing the first month of the 2022 campaign with a balky elbow, Miley managed to make just three starts for the Cubs before a sore left shoulder sent the former first-round pick (2008) back to the injured list and out of action for most of the last three weeks.

Miley didn’t go on any rehab assignment before the Cubs decided to activate him for this game. He made two quality starts prior to landing on the IL with the Cubs, winning both of those contests as home favorites at the top-rated sportsbooks against Arizona and Pittsburgh.

Suffice to say Miley will be facing a more potent Yankees lineup than the batting orders the Diamondbacks and Pirates trotted out against him. Miley will be seeking career win No. 99 in this outing, and facing the Yankees for the first time since June 2019 when he dropped a decision in New York (5 IP, 4 ER) while pitching for the Astros.

Luis Severino: Pitcher Analysis

Last Saturday at home, Severino pitched a real beauty in a 3-0 win over Detroit. Closing as huge -250 chalk at BetOnline (visit our BetOnline Review), Severino allowed just one hit over his 7 innings of work, and most of his 92 pitches were strikes as he whiffed 10 Tigers along the way.

The victory over Detroit was the eighth time New York came out on the good side of the MLB scores in Severino’s 10 assignments and left baseball bettors following him and the Yankees in those games up nearly 5½ units on the year.

Severino faced the Cubs only once before and pitched well enough to win only to take a no-decision. He allowed just one run – a Javier Baez homer – in 7 innings at Wrigley Field in that May 2017 assignment, but New York relievers blew the lead and the Yankees finally won the contest in 18 innings.

Injury Report

Chicago Cubs

In addition to getting Miley back from the injured list, Chicago is hopeful of seeing rookie Seiya Suzuki back on Friday after the outfielder missed the last couple of weeks with a sprained finger.

New York Yankees

New York has also seen a few key players return from the injured list recently, but the Yankees’ bullpen is still dealing with a shortage while closer Aroldis Chapman (Achilles) and Jonathan Loaisiga (shoulder) are on the mend.

Weather Report

  • A few clouds and a little humidity are part of Mother Nature’s Friday night plans for the Bronx.
  • Fans inside 'The House That George Built' can expect a muggy 78° when Severino delivers the first pitch along with a 10-12 mph WNW breeze (out to right).
