There isn’t anything soft about the numbers at the best sportsbooks for Friday’s clash between a couple of very public teams out in Los Angeles where the Dodgers entertain the Chicago Cubs for the weekend.

Chicago Cubs vs. Los Angeles Dodgers

Friday, July 08, 2022 – 10:10 PM EDT at Dodger Stadium

This Could Have Been an Epic Rivalry

It wasn’t that long ago that the Chicago Cubs and Los Angeles Dodgers were both competitive and teased us with the thought of a rivalry between the City of Big Shoulders and Tinseltown for years to come.

Of course, that was 2016, and a lot of things in life were better compared to today when the probable pitchers are Keegan Thompson (7-3, 3.41) for the Cubs and Tyler Anderson (9-1, 3.09) for the Dodgers who are showing up as hefty -215 favorites with 8.5 for the total.

Season Series and Rivalry Trends

Los Angeles opened the series with a 5-3 win on Thursday while carrying an even thicker chalk line on MLB odds boards. The Dodgers shot out to a 3-0 lead after the second inning to gain control of the contest early.

Thursday’s triumph marked the seventh in a row for the Dodgers in the rivalry after they swept three from the Cubs at Wrigley Field in May. Totals ran 2-0-1 O/U/P in Chicago about two months ago, and the series opener stopped squarely on what was an 8-run mark at most shops.

  • Last year’s four-game series at Chavez Ravine ran 0-3-1 O/U/P, and totals stand 0-5-2 in the last seven games played in LA.
  • This has been a pretty even rivalry dating back to the 19th century; the Dodgers are up 1,071-1,052 against the Cubs.
  • Friday marks the 15th consecutive meeting for the Dodgers to be favored. The last time Chicago was chalk for a game in Los Angeles was Game 5 of the 2016 NLCS.

Keegan Thompson Notes

One of the game’s top hurlers in April and May when he was 5-0 with a 1.58 ERA (40 IP) across three starts and eight long relief outings, things have sort of gone sideways for Keegan Thompson since then with a 2-3 record and 5.74 ERA in seven assignments (31.1 IP).

Thompson has definitely been at his best in matchups out of the bullpen or at home in Wrigley Field. The former Auburn star is 4-1 with a 2.33 ERA (46.1 IP) on the mound at the friendly confines, compared to a 5.40 ERA on the road. He has a 1.40 ERA (25.2 IP) as a reliever and 4.53 ERA (45.2 IP) as a starter.

This will be just the second time Thompson has faced the Dodgers as a starting pitcher, the other being his first career start in May 2021 in Chicago (3.2 IP, 0 ER, ND). His only experience at Dodger Stadium came in a couple of relief appearances a little more than a year ago (2 IP, 1 ER).

Tyler Anderson Notes

Following his first loss of the season – and the Dodgers’ third in his 13 starting assignments – Anderson hopped right back into the win column the last time out with a strong performance over Yu Darvish and the rival Padres as -145 chalk at Bovada (visit our Bovada Review).

Anderson’s previous two starts came in more hitter-friendly environments, Great American Ball Park in Cincinnati and Coors Field in Denver, and he was touched up for seven runs in 11 innings in those contests.

He beat the Cubs at Wrigley Field back in May, allowing two runs in five innings while striking out seven. Anderson was 1-3 (3.86) against them over four starts in 2021 while pitching for the Pirates. The Las Vegas native is 6-0 with a 2.74 ERA in nearly 43 innings of work at Dodger Stadium this season.

Umpire Trends and Notes

Ryan Additon will be the umpire calling balls and strikes in the second contest of this four-game set. This is the 16th plate assignment for the Miami native this season, and Additon has made friends with bettors playing the ‘over’ at top-rated sportsbooks with his 9-5-1 O/U/P record.

Friday’s Best Bets

Thursday’s total between the Cubs and Dodgers also started at 8.5 before getting bet down to a flat-8, and I’m going to play the ‘under’ with my MLB picks before the same thing happens again on Friday’s collision.

The Dodgers also have too much going their way right now not to play them to extend their dominance over the Cubs for an eighth consecutive time and do so with at least two runs to spare.
