One of baseball’s best rivalries takes place in St. Louis this weekend, and we’ve got a free MLB picks for the series opener between the Cardinals and Chicago Cubs.

Chicago Cubs vs. St. Louis Cardinals

Friday, June 24, 2022 – 08:15 PM EDT at Busch Stadium

NL Central Standings

Unable to separate themselves from the Brewers at the top of the NL Central standings after splitting a series in Milwaukee this week, the St. Louis Cardinals head home and turn their attention to the Chicago Cubs, who are struggling near the bottom of the division.

The Midwest rivals will begin matters with a matchup on the mound between veteran Kyle Hendricks (2-6, 5.43) and rookie Andre Pallante (2-2, 1.69), and it’s the youngster drawing the chalk line with Pallante and the Cardinals favored around -150 at top-rated sportsbooks where the total is 9.

Cubs vs. Cardinals Rivalry Notes

This is the second meeting between the old rivals this season, the first taking place three weeks ago in Chicago where the Cardinals took three of five from the Cubs, the extra-long set made necessary after an April series at Wrigley Field was wiped out due to the delayed start to the season.

Cubs vs. Cardinals Trends

  • The Cardinals have won three of the last four season series, with the teams splitting their 2020 slate.
  • The Cubs held their own last year in St. Louis, splitting the 10 games played at Busch Stadium.
  • Discounting the 2020 season when none of the matchups took place in St. Louis, the ‘under’ has cashed in 19 of the last 30 clashes with the Cardinals on their own diamond.

Kyle Hendricks Analysis

It’s a good thing Hendricks has his 2016 ring to remind him of better times, because other than a couple of outings against the Pirates and Padres, there isn’t anything for the righthander to crow about in 2022.

Hendricks certainly won’t include his last start in a 2022 highlight film. Closing as a +141 underdog at Heritage, Hendricks and the Cubs fell behind early in a 6-0 home loss to the Braves. It was his third loss in the last five starts, and Chicago’s fourth in that span.

Despite it being a 5-game series when the teams met a few weeks ago, Hendricks did not face the Cardinals. Chicago won three of his four assignments against the Cardinals last season. Hendricks is 4-0 with a sparkling 1.89 ERA in his last six Busch Stadium starts.

Andre Pallante Analysis

The transition from reliever to starter has gone smoothly for Pallante. The rookie began the season with 17 appearances from the bullpen while posting a 1.09 ERA before making his MLB starting debut. In his three starts, Pallante has averaged five innings and 62 pitches with a 1.80 ERA.

Pallante took the loss last Sunday in Boston, though he pitched much better (5.2 IP, 2 ER) than his fellow Cardinal relievers (2.1 IP, 4 ER) who let a close game get away in a St. Louis loss as +140 road chalk on the baseball odds.

A fourth-round pick in 2019 out of Cal-Irvine, Pallante’s first career start came against the Cubs a few weeks ago. St. Louis closed as -115 chalk in that one as Pallante allowed one run in four innings. The Cardinals eventually won the game in 10 innings by a 7-4 score.

Cubs Injury List

The Cubs are still a week or so away from getting two key players back from the injured list.

Seiya Suzuki (finger) has been out since late May but is starting to make some progress by hitting in the cage. Marcus Stroman (shoulder) has resumed throwing and could rejoin the team by July 4.

Cardinals Injury List

The Cardinals are currently playing without their field general, Yadier Molina (knee), and he is expected to remain sidelined for at least two more weeks.

Paul Goldschmidt was slowed by back issues this week at Milwaukee, but recovered and was at first base in Thursday’s series finale.

MLB Pick for Today

Chicago and St. Louis fans are reminded that no matter what package they already paid for in order to enjoy watching their favorite team on the telly this year, they’ll need to fork over additional bucks and get the Apple service to see their beloved Cubs or Cardinals tonight.

Me? I’ll probably just tune into the radio broadcast through a bootleg login on my trusty little laptop, relying on John Rooney to describe the action down on the Busch Stadium field, an action that I’m betting will go in favor of the visitors as Hendricks baffles the Redbirds once again.
