The St. Louis Cardinals defeated the Washington Nationals in the first game of the weekend series. Can the Cardinals continue its dominance over the worst team in baseball?

Let’s see what the MLB odds tell us at the top sportsbooks! Here are our picks and predictions for tonight’s game between the Cardinals and Nationals.

St. Louis Cardinals vs. Washington Nationals

Saturday, July 30, 2022 – 07:15 PM EDT at Nationals Park

How Are the Cardinals Doing?

The St. Louis Cardinals defeated the Washington Nationals 6-2 in yesterday’s series opener.

The Cardinals were able to get two massive bats back into the lineup between Paul Goldschmidt and Nolan Arenado after both of those two missed a couple of games due to being unvaccinated.

The Cardinals don’t have to worry about any of that anymore.

How Are the Nationals Doing?

Meanwhile, the Nationals have the worst record in baseball and will be looking to change up their team in the next few days.

It’s unlikely a trade will happen before tonight’s game but keep that in mind if you’re going to bet this game.

The Cardinals are looking to get better while the Nationals are trying to get worse.

Who Is Pitching for the Nationals Today?

The Nationals have struggled in every single area this season. Starting pitching has been bad and Erick Fedde hasn’t helped the rotation one bit.

Fedde will get the start today with a 6-7 record and an ERA of 4.95. In the last 30 days, Fedde has a 6.60 xFIP with 12.2% of strikeouts and 14.4% of walks.

Things have just been awful for Fedde.

Who Is Pitching for the Cardinals Today?

On the other hand, Cardinals pitcher Dakota Hudson hasn’t been much better. He’s 6-6 with an ERA of 4.10 on the season and has a 5.71 xFIP in the last 30 days.

Hudson, like Fedde, has had low strikeouts and high walks in the last 30 days. Hudson has also allowed 29.4% of line drives in the last 30 days, which is just extremely high.

That line drive rate isn’t even the worst stat. Hudson is also allowing 49% of hard contact when balls are being batted into play.

Lineups Analysis

Washington Nationals

  • The Nationals are only getting production out of Juan Soto, Josh Bell, and Yadiel Hernandez.
  • Bell figures to be off this team in a few days while it’s anyone’s guess on Juan Soto.
  • Other than those three hitters, the Nationals have struggled.
  • As a projected lineup, the Nationals have a .135 ISO and wOBA of .311 in the last 30 days.
  • Take those three guys away and things look terrible.

St. Louis Cardinals

  • The same could be said about the Cardinals against righties.
  • Nolan Gorman, Lars Nootbaar, along with Goldschmidt and Arenado have produced against righties.
  • Beyond those four, the Cardinals don’t have the most exciting offense either.
  • Dylan Carlson, however, has shown off some power against righties, holding a .180 ISO, which is still above average in the last 30 days.

Cardinals vs. Nationals: Game Prediction

While both lineups don’t look incredible in the last 30 days against righties, both starting pitchers have been hit by pretty much every team they’ve faced this year. In the last 30 days, Fedde has a 6.60 xFIP and Hudson has a 5.71 xFIP.

Hudson has kept the power down but he’s not getting strikeouts, is giving up plenty of walks, and continues to give up hard, line drive contact.

On the other hand, Fedde is giving up a ton of power and has allowed a .413 wOBA with an ISO of .237 to lefties along with a .398 wOBA and ISO of .263 to righties in the last 30 days.

Cardinals' Lineup Against Fedde

  • The Cardinals used to have a mostly right-handed lineup, but that’s changed now.
  • The Cardinals will have five lefties in the lineup taking on Fedde.
  • Lefties are doing more damage in terms of line-drive potential.

Nationals' Lineup Against Hudson

  • The Nationals should also be stacked with lefties.
  • The projected lineup has seven lefties in the lineup and they’ll take on Hudson, who walks plenty more lefties than righties.
  • He’s also given up 40.9% of line drives against lefties in the last 30 days.

MLB Betting Pick for Today

With all of that said, I’m going to rely on both lineups to get the job done offensively tonight. The Nationals will have seven lefties in their lineup while the Cardinals should have at least five in their lineup.

Both pitchers have xFIPs that are also extremely high and their ERAs are starting to inflate because of it too.

Therefore, for my MLB picks of the day, I’m going to trust the bats in this one.
