Editor’s Note: The Cardinals vs. Mets game was postponed due to weather forecast and will be part of a doubleheader on Tuesday.

After destroying the Giants on Sunday Night Baseball, the Cardinals will travel to New York and take on the New York Mets, on the road.

The Mets are 23-13 but just lost their first series of the season to the Seattle Mariners, after almost coming back in the 9th inning for an improbable comeback win. Meanwhile, the Cardinals found a way to beat up the San Francisco Giants in their series and will look to continue that momentum into tonight’s game.

Will the Cardinals run out of gas after a ridiculous offensive explosion last night? Let’s see what the MLB odds tell us at the top sportsbooks!

St. Louis Cardinals vs. New York Mets

Monday, May 16, 2022 – 07:10 PM EDT at Citi Field

The Pitching Matchup

The New York Mets got some bad news last week. Tylor Megill had some inflammation and was put on the Injured List. Therefore, Trevor Williams will get the start for the Mets tonight.

Williams has a 5.73 ERA to start the season along with a WHIP of 1.64. He’s been dealt a tough hand, having to mop up bad pitching and start in games due to injuries. It’s a tough role but ultimately, he had his best outing against Washington on May 11, allowing no runs on 2 hits in 3.2 innings of work.

Meanwhile, Miles Mikolas has a 1.49 ERA on the season with a .94 WHIP to start the year. Mikolas already went seven innings against the Mets in his first start against them, allowing no runs on 4 hits with 5 strikeouts.

Mikolas also has a 3.96 xFIP in the last 30 days with just 4.1% of walks. He’s been legitimately good and the Cardinals are still underdogs in tonight’s game.

Who Has the More Favorable Lineup?

The Mets have a .123 ISO with a .318 wOBA against righties in the last 30 days. The power is lacking but the strikeout rates aren’t. The Mets' projected lineup is striking out just 16.1% of the time against righties, which is favorable.

On the other hand, the Cardinals have a .168 ISO and wOBA of .329 against righties. Like the Mets, the Cardinals limited strikeouts to 18.6% against righties.

The Cardinals are usually poor against righties, however, Williams has a .398 wOBA and ISO of .263 to righties in his last 21 plate appearances. There’s reason to think that the Cardinals could do damage.

Game Prediction

The Mets are basically in a bullpen game while the Cardinals send out a starter with a 1.49 ERA. Yet, because the Mets are home, they’re favorites in tonight’s game for the best sportsbooks.

Williams has been bad against righties to start the year and the Cardinals will have eight righties in the lineup that can do damage.

Neither team will strike out all that much and neither team will walk very much either with these two pitchers on the mound. But more power will come from the Cardinals against Williams.

Mikolas has really limited power, allowing a .076 ISO to lefties and a .055 ISO to righties in the last 30 days. His xFIP is much higher than his ERA, however, so regression is in store. However, if his ERA jumps up to a 3, that’s still very good for MIkolas’ standards.

Cardinals vs. Mets: Betting Pick

With that said, I’m liking the Cardinals on the moneyline tonight. It pains me. I’m a Mets fan but you’re getting Miles Mikolas on the mound against the Mets’ bullpen that absolutely got rocked during yesterday’s game against the Mariners.

Mikolas will regress but Trevor Williams isn’t going to throw a gem either. He’s also not going to finish 5 innings. Knowing that the Cardinals righties have an advantage against Williams is enough for me.

For your MLB picks, let's take the Cardinals on the moneyline at +105. That’s a great number after looking at this matchup between the two teams.
