First place in the NL Central is up for grabs Wednesday in Milwaukee, and we have found a winning angle for a free MLB pick in the matchup between the Brewers and St. Louis Cardinals.

St. Louis Cardinals vs. Milwaukee Brewers

Wednesday, June 22, 2022 – 08:10 PM EDT at American Family Field

When St. Louis arrived in Milwaukee to begin a 4-game series the Cardinals and Brewers were tied for the NL Central lead, and after splitting the first two games on the MLB scoreboard, the rivals remain deadlocked atop the division standings.

Game 3 of the long set features a rematch on the mound of a contest in St. Louis back in May, as Adam Wainwright (5-5, 3.06) and Eric Lauer (6-2, 3.57) square off in a contest that is running close to a pick ‘em on BMR’s live odds board with 8½ for the total.

Season Series and Rivalry Trends

This is the third 4-game series between the division foes this season, and the second to take place in Milwaukee. The Cardinals and Brewers split the previous two series, with St. Louis outscoring Milwaukee 33-30 in those eight games. The totals split 4-4 O/U in the eight matchups prior to Monday.

  • With Tuesday’s triumph, St. Louis has a 39-38 edge over Milwaukee since the start of the 2018 season,
  • St. Louis holds a 237-182 advantage in the rivalry across the years, that record including their 1982 World Series and 2011 NLCS matchups.

Adam Wainwright Analysis

A grizzled old veteran of 17 seasons now, Wainwright is making his 14th start of 2022. Poor run support led to the 40-year-old losing three of his first five assignments. That has turned around since the end of April with St. Louis winning six of his last eight starts.

One of the losses came last Friday in Boston where Wainwright was matched up against his former Cardinals teammate Michael Wacha, and the Red Sox built a 4-1 lead before holding on for a 6-5 decision as small favorites at Heritage.

Two more defeats came against these Brewers. They scored four runs on Wainwright in Milwaukee back in April when he failed to make it through the fifth. The Brewers reached him for four runs again – 3 earned – in a May start at Busch Stadium, both of those contests closing with Milwaukee favored.

Eric Lauer Analysis

This will be Lauer’s lucky 13th start of 2022. June has been anything but lucky for the southpaw who has pitched to a 6.75 ERA in his three outings on the month. Especially troubling is the fact Lauer has served up three homers in each of his last two starts after allowing eight across his first 10 assignments.

He somehow managed to win at Cincinnati last Friday despite giving up three clouts, two of them solo shots in the sixth inning before his bullpen rescued Lauer for a 5-4 victory that came with the Brewers closing as small favorites on the MLB odds

Lauer was on the winning end of the MLB scores when he faced off against Wainwright in St. Louis about a month ago. He was charged with two runs in the course of five innings and had some control issues with four walks. Lauer has been money at home in Milwaukee this season, the Brewers winning three of his four starts while he pitched to a 1.04 ERA (26 IP).

Milwaukee Weather and Roof Report

The roof was open for the first two games in Milwaukee where game time temps were still in the 90s. Wednesday’s forecast calls for the thermometer to only reach the mid-80s. Clear skies and a light northerly breeze (out to right) accompany the cooler weather.

Umpire Notes and Trends

Brian Knight will be the umpire behind the plate for Wednesday’s contest. Now in his 22nd season, Knight’s games at the dish are a fairly level 5-6 in 2022 after being known as more of an ‘over’ ump the past five seasons. The Montana native will be calling balls and strikes at old Miller Park for the first time since 2015.

Cardinals vs. Brewers Best Bet

With slugging first baseman Paul Goldschmidt ailing and out of the lineup due to a bad back on Tuesday, St. Louis rookie Nolan Gorman picked up the slack with a pair of homers while driving in four runs, and I look for Cardinal hitters to prevail once again behind Wainwright.
