Our free MLB picks itinerary this week includes two stops in Atlanta where the Braves host the St. Louis Cardinals for a long 4-game series between old National League rivals.
There are promises of a great fireworks show Monday night at Truist Park in Atlanta after the game between the Braves and St. Louis Cardinals, and there could be more fireworks during the contest that pits a couple of second-place squads struggling to keep pace with their respective division leaders.
St. Louis Cardinal vs. Atlanta Braves
Monday, July 04, 2022 – 07:20 PM EDT at Truist Park
Cardinals vs. Braves: Who Starts Today?
The MLB odds show Wright and Atlanta -165 chalk, plus or minus a few pennies. Monday’s scoreboard target is 9 and is generally priced to the ‘Over.’
How Are the Cardinals Doing?
It has been a slow slide for St. Louis the past couple of weeks. The Cardinals had a slim lead over Milwaukee 10 days ago, but have since fallen two games behind a surging Brewers team in the NL Central race.
Cardinals' Injured List
St. Louis hopes to have Yadier Molina (knee) and Steven Matz (shoulder) back from the injured list around the All-Star Game, but will have to wait longer – possibly much longer – before Jack Flaherty (shoulder) can pitch again.
How Are the Braves Doing?
Slowly but surely, the Braves have closed on New York in the NL East. Atlanta won road series at Philadelphia and Cincinnati this past week, closing the trip with a 4-3 loss on Sunday as -161 chalk at Heritage Sports (visit our Heritage Sports Review) against the Reds.
Braves' Injured List
Atlanta has slugger Adam Duvall (hand) on the day-to-day list beginning this series and is still without closer Kenley Jansen (heart) for at least the next week or more.
Cardinals vs. Braves: Pitchers Analysis
After beginning June with a pair of quality starts, Hudson tailed off in the next four. Those four assignments saw Hudson allow 16 earned runs in 21.1 innings (6.75 ERA), lifting his season ERA by more than a run.
Thanks to the St. Louis bullpen tossing four scoreless innings last Tuesday against Miami, Hudson got the dubya in a 5-3 decision over the Marlins, leaving St. Louis 8-7 in his 2022 assignments, and up a little more than a unit on the betting odds.
Hudson last faced the Braves in Game 4 of the 2019 NLDS. The former Mississippi State star worked into the fifth while allowing 4 runs (1 earned) in a no-decision. He is 2-3 with a 4.57 ERA in eight road starts.
Favored at top-rated sportsbooks in all six June assignments, Wright brought home the bacon in five of them while pitching to a 3.52 ERA (38.1 IP) and ended the month with a solid effort last Wednesday in Philadelphia where he held the Phillies to three hits and a run over seven frames.
This will be the first time in Wright’s career to face the Cardinals. He is 3-1 in four starts against NL Central teams this year, and 6-2 in nine assignments at Truist Park where the Alabama native owns a 4.90 lifetime ERA (including the postseason).
Atlanta has dominated the rivalry in recent years, at least during regular season play. The Braves won six of the seven matchups last season, and have been on the winning side of the MLB scores in 14 of the last 19 regular-season meetings.
- The Braves won three of the four clashes in Atlanta a season ago, and have won six of the last eight played on their home diamond.
- Totals ranging from 7½-9½ split in the 4-game set at Truist Park in 2021.
- The teams have met five times in the playoffs, most recently in the 2019 NLDS.
- The Cardinals will host the Braves for a 3-game series in late August.
Atlanta's Weather Forecast
There is rain in the forecast throughout the day and into the evening. Chances for precipitation decrease starting around 05:00 PM, leaving behind mostly cloudy skies for the fireworks show. The weatherman says low-80s at game time with a light SE breeze 9in from center).
Cardinals vs. Braves: Betting Pick and Prediction
St. Louis is not the same team without Molina squatting behind the dish and playing his role of field general for the Cardinals, and Atlanta’s bullpen is in a bit of disarray without having Jensen at the back end sewing up victories.
The chalk is justified on Wright and the Braves for the first of four games between the teams. Atlanta covers the run line in a 6-3 final.
MLB Pick: Braves -1½ (+117) at Heritage Sports
