We’re in a New York state of mind searching for a winning MLB pick or two in Tuesday’s series finale between the Yankees and Mets.

As the Yankees and Mets close out their short 2-game series in the Bronx, we can’t help but wonder if Subway Series Part II might be waiting for us in October.

New York Mets vs. New York Yankees

Tuesday, August 23, 2022 – 07:05 PM EDT at Yankee Stadium

Who Are Today's Starting Pitchers?

Finishing up the quick set on the mound are a pair of right-handers on the probable pitchers slate, Taijuan Walker (10-3, 3.36) for the Mets and the Yankees’ Frankie Montas (4-10, 3.87).

Monday Night Recap

It was the Yankees grabbing the underdog cheddar in Monday’s matchup, a 4-2 decision against Mets ace Max Scherzer that added +140 or so to the pockets of the bettors who backed the Bronx Bombers.

A lackluster offense has plagued the Yankees during their recent struggles, but the top of the batting order keyed the win. Andrew Benintendi and Aaron Judge each had 2 hits, with Judge taking Scherzer over the WB Mason sign right for his 47th home run.

Rivalry Trends

  • The win marked the first time since late July for the Yankees to win two games in a row.
  • The final came up short of a 7½-run total leaving Mets-Yankees games 1-2 O/U this season.
  • The Mets are 5-5 O/U in their last 10 games while the Yankees are running 2-8 O/U.

Pitchers Analysis

Taijuan Walker

Diagnosed with a slight disc bulge in his lower back, Walker couldn’t answer the call for his start this past weekend against the Phillies. The 30-year-old left his assignment early last Tuesday due to back pain and was then scratched on Sunday in Philadelphia.

Walker did not allow a run in the 2 innings he did get in at Atlanta before heading to the trainer’s table. New York would eventually fall by a 5-0 score in a game the Braves closed as -155 home favorites at the MLB odds.

Prior to the early exit in Atlanta, Walker had helped the Mets into the winner’s circle in four of his previous five assignments. One of those came against the Yankees at Citi Field on July 26 when Walker went 6 frames and allowed 3 runs in a 6-3 final, 2 of those runs coming on back-to-back blasts by Judge and Anthony Rizzo in the first inning.

Frankie Montas

The acquisition of Montas from Oakland opened up an opportunity for the Yankees to deal Jordan Montgomery to St. Louis for outfield depth in the form of Harrison Bader. Montas has yet to live up to his potential since the deal, and Bader (heel) has yet to make his Yankees debut.

Montas only had one bad inning last week against the Blue Jays, but it was one really bad inning. The Dominican allowed 6 runs over 6 innings, 5 of those runs coming in the second and 3 on a single pitch Vlad Guerrero Jr. crushed for a homer in a 9-2 Toronto win.

New York was -155 chalk at BetOnline (visit our BetOnline Review) in that contest, and it left Montas with a 9.00 ERA across three starts for the Yankees (14 IP). He will be facing the Mets for just the second time in his career, the first coming out of the bullpen in a 2017 interleague clash while he was with the A’s.

Who Is the Umpire Today?

Crew chief Alfonso Marquez lines up to be the umpire at the dish calling balls and strikes in the series finale.

One of his season trends the Yankees would like to see repeat is a strong 13-5 record for home teams in Marquez’s plate assignments.

In the totals column, dish duty by Marquez has produced 10-7-1 O/U/P results at top-rated sportsbooks, and 4-2 O/U when the number is 8½ like it is for Tuesday’s series finale.

Mets vs. Yankees: Best Bet and Odds for Today

Along with the 8½-run total, BMR’s live odds board has the Yankees listed as modest favorites in the -125 to -130 range for Tuesday’s tilt.

One prop bet to consider for the clash is Judge popping his 48th home run of the season. It can be wagered around +200 depending on your preferred shop, and I’m liking that play with Judge 3-for-9 lifetime against Walker, and all 3 hits leaving the yard.

As for the game, a Judge home run might be all we get as I follow the trend the Yankees have been on with a play on the final coming up short of the total.
