It will be No. 2 hosting No. 4 as two of the best teams in the National League meet in San Diego for three games to start the week. The Milwaukee Brewers have won three of four and five of the last seven to lead the NL Central by three games.

They’ll face the Padres, who have won four straight. Despite trailing the Dodgers by a half-game in the West, San Diego is the second-best team in the National League and third-best in all of baseball.

Here is all you need to know for your MLB picks.

Milwaukee Brewers vs. San Diego Padres

Monday, May 23, 2022 – 09:40 PM EDT at Petco Park

Bookmakers Review’s Betting Edge

  • The series will match two of the top four records in the NL, but it also brings together two of the most untested teams in MLB.

  • As we hit the last week of May, only three teams have played fewer than 10 games against opponents with a winning record.

  • San Diego is 5-4 against teams with a winning record and coming off a sweep in San Francisco over the weekend that produced one-third of those nine games.

  • The Brewers, at 2-3 against teams over .500, have played the fewest such games. The last time they faced a winner was a game against the Giants on April 25, which was 25 games ago.

Milwaukee's Last Game

After winning four of the first five homestand games, the Brewers hit the road on a sour note. Milwaukee gave up its biggest inning of the season, made two errors, and hit into several double plays in a disappointing 8-2 loss to Washington on Sunday.

The Brewers also saw top starting pitcher Freddy Peralta leave the game early and end up on the injured list, putting the staff in a rough spot with 11 road games in the next 10 days.

Despite Sunday’s clunker, the Brewers staff is still on an impressive run. The starters had a 2.57 ERA with 34 strikeouts in 35 innings over the six-game homestand, while the bullpen struck out 22 in 21 innings, posting a 2.14 ERA.

The Brewers also got back two offensive weapons over the weekend. Andrew McCutchen returned after being quarantined with a COVID positive test, while Keston Hiura said he was on his “death bed” after going down with non-COVID flu-like symptoms.

Who Starts For the Brewers Today?

Milwaukee will start Adrian Houser in Monday’s series opener. The righty is coming off 6.2 scoreless innings in his last start, although it still resulted in his second straight loss as the Braves plated an unearned run.

San Diego's Last Game

San Diego is coming off of a sweep of division rival San Francisco. The Padres blew out the Giants 10-1 on Sunday and outscored them 20-9 over the three games.

San Diego has won six of the last seven and is winning in every possible way. They’ve had two wins by one run over that span and three wins by three or more. They’ve won when scoring 7,8 and 10 runs, and they’ve won three when scoring 3 or fewer, including a pair of shutouts.

Padres' Starting Pitcher

The Padres have also won despite having their starting pitching shaken up. Mike Clevinger, returning this season from Tommy John surgery, went to the injured list over the weekend with triceps soreness. That means San Diego has to return Nick Martinez to the rotation for Monday’s game.

After starting six games this season, Martinez was sent to the pen, along with Sunday’s starter Mackenzie Gore, when Clevinger and Blake Snell were ready to rejoin the rotation.

Now, both pitchers are back in the starting group as San Diego scrambles to keep its rotation intact.

Martinez had 4 scoreless innings on May 18 in his lone relief stint. He’s 5-2, 3.89 on the year.

Brewers vs. Padres: Picks and Prediction

The Padres and Brewers are both hot, both contenders, and both looking for strong starts to help solidify injury-marred staffs.

Following the MLB odds, San Diego gets the nod on the basis of playing at home and having more recent experience playing top teams.

Runs will be at a premium with two of the best staff in MLB squaring off.
