Atlanta Braves vs. New York Mets

Monday, May 02, 2022 – 07:10 PM EDT at Citi Field

Betting Preview

The New York Mets have now won seven straight series to start the season. The Mets are now 16-7 and looking forward to taking on the reigning and defending MLB World Series Champions to start a new week.

The Braves are just 10-13 on the season but added Ronald Acuna Jr. back from the IR and are starting to take shape.

The Braves will send out left-hander Max Fried, who is 2-2 with a 3.00 ERA. Last season, Fried was almost an automatic quality start candidate. This year, he’s looking just as good.

On the year, Fried has a 3.07 xFIP with 22.3% strikeouts along with 1.1% walks. He’s kept ISO power numbers down and wOBA from both sides have been very low as well.

The Mets also haven’t been great hitting for power against lefties this season. The projected lineup has a .105 ISO and a wOBA of .290 against lefties. Only Eduardo Escobar, Brandon Nimmo, and Francisco Lindor have been consistent against lefties this season with high wOBA and ISO numbers.

On the other hand, Chris Bassitt will take the hill for the Mets. He’s been just as good as Fried with a 3-1 record and a 2.25 ERA. Bassitt has an xFIP of 3.98 with 28% strikeouts and 7.5% walks.

He’s inducing 46.6% ground balls and only allowing 15.5% line drives to start the year. However, Bassitt has struggled a bit against lefties to start the season, allowing a .342 wOBA and ISO of .178.

In the Braves lineup, there are two powerful lefties between Matt Olson and Ozzie Albies. Olson has a .214 ISO and wOBA of .401 while Albies has a .232 ISO but just a .303 wOBA.

The rest of the lineup for the Braves will be right-handed. Atlanta’s still been the hotter offense with a .235 ISO and wOBA of .346 against righties using the projected lineup. However, the Braves also have seven players hitting a 44.2% ground ball rate or above against righties this year. With Bassitt specializing in ground balls to start the year, the Braves might hit themselves out of an inning or two.

In a game between Max Fried and Chris Bassitt, the under is expected. Fried has a 3.00 ERA while Bassitt has a 2.25 ERA. The Mets also are coming off a Sunday Night game and could struggle early with a little bit less time to prepare for this game in comparison to the Braves.

However, the Braves were the ones that traveled to New York and could also start off a little slow in this one.

Therefore, following the MLB odds, I’ll test my luck with the Under 3.5 in the first five innings with one of BMR's best sportsbooks.
