Playoff hopefuls before the season, the Toronto Blue Jays and Chicago White Sox square off Monday on the Windy City’s South Side and we have a free MLB pick for their series opener.

If the 2022 Chicago White Sox were an inanimate object, they might be a car stuck in the mud and spinning its wheels as they come off a road trip to begin a homestand against the Toronto Blue Jays.

Blue Jays vs. White Sox: Today's Pitchers

The second and final regular-season meeting between the two teams gets underway with an initial mound duel between Jose Berrios (5-2, 4.65) for Toronto and Chicago’s Lance Lynn (0-0, 6.23).

It has the Blue Jays riding a -130 chalk line on BMR’s betting odds board with a 9-run total that favors the ‘Over.’

Rivalry Trends

It was a little more than three weeks ago when Toronto hosted Chicago at Rogers Centre. The Blue Jays swept the 3-game set for their first home series win in the rivalry since 2018. ‘Over’ bettors also swept the set that included totals in the 7½ to 8½ range at the top sportsbooks and betting sites.

  • Toronto’s sweep earlier this season left the Blue Jays with a 216-200 advantage in regular-season meetings with the White Sox.
  • Last year’s series in Chicago went to the White Sox, two games to one.
  • Two of the games at Guaranteed Rate Field a season ago stayed ‘Under’ the totals, with a third pushing an 8-run mark.

Jose Berrios: Blue Jays Pitcher Analysis

Did something click for Berrios when calendars shifted from May to June? That would seem to be the case for the Puerto Rican who has helped the Blue Jays to win MLB scores in each of his three outings this month. Berrios has a 2.45 ERA in the three assignments, with 26 strikeouts in 22 innings.

It was a no-decision for Berrios last Wednesday at home against Baltimore, the 28-year-old working 7 frames and allowing 3 runs while striking out 8 as the Blue Jays eventually claimed a 7-6 win in 10 innings as prohibitive -310 chalk on the MLB odds.

Berrios missed facing the White Sox when they came to Toronto a few weeks ago. He faced Chicago four times last season, the first three of those starts while with the Twins. All four of those assignments resulted in losses for his respective teams, Berrios working a combined 21 innings and allowing 13 earned runs (5.57).

Lance Lynn: White Sox Pitcher Analysis

Surgery on a tendon in his right knee back in April sidelined Lynn to begin the season, and he finally made his 2022 debut last Monday in Detroit where the veteran righthander got in 88 pitches before being relieved in the fifth inning of a 9-5 Chicago win that came as -130 chalk at BetOnline (visit our BetOnline Review).

Lynn wasn’t exactly sharp in the outing allowing 10 hits. One of those hits was a homer by Tigers centerfielder Willi Castro leading off the game. While Detroit touched him for those 10 hits, at least Lynn didn’t put anyone on via the free pass while striking out 4.

Facing the Blue Jays twice in 2021, Lynn should’ve recorded a pair of wins only to come away with two no-decisions as he worked 7 innings and allowed just one run in each outing. The 35-year-old was 7-3 with a solid 2.56 ERA in 17 starts at Guaranteed Rate Field last season.

Blue Jays vs. White Sox: Injury Report

Toronto Blue Jays Injured List

Toronto begins this road trip in pretty good shape. The Blue Jays missed shortstop Bo Bichette for a game last week due to a foot injury, but he returned over the weekend to finish Toronto’s home series against the New York Yankees.

Chicago White Sox Injured List

Chicago is expected to bring shortstop Tim Anderson off the injured list for Monday’s series opener. Anderson has been idle since late May with a groin injury and spent the past few days rehabbing at Triple-A Charlotte. He is expected to bat leadoff for the White Sox in the series opener.

MLB Betting Pick for Today

Though they lost ground to the Yankees over the weekend at home, the Blue Jays have to feel good about flexing their muscles in a rally to win a slugfest in the series finale, all while the White Sox had a late flight home return from Houston following a loss on ESPN’s Sunday Night Baseball.

With Lynn still trying to get things together, my play will be on the visitors; Toronto wins, 5-4.
