A long series in New York between the Yankees and Toronto Blue Jays continues on Wednesday’s baseball betting calendar and features a couple of pitchers who were knocked around in their season debuts.
Toronto Blue Jays vs. New York Yankees
Wednesday, April 13, 2022 – 07:05 PM EDT at Yankee Stadium
We know that statistics are always a bit exaggerated in the early days of a baseball season, and we know everything gets exaggerated in New York where the Yankees continue a 4-game series with the Toronto Blue Jays on Wednesday.
The two sides have split the first two matches in this 4-game set, and Wednesday’s winner could catch Tampa Bay at the top of the AL East. Game 3 also offers the opportunity for Toronto’s Jose Berrios (0-0, 108.00) and New York’s Gerrit Cole (0-0, 6.75) to redeem themselves after both hurlers had disappointing season debuts, though their teams rebounded to come out on the right side of the MLB scores last week.
‘Under’ Cashes 5 of Last 6 Meetings in NY
New York is priced on a -145 moneyline at Heritage Sports (read our Heritage Sports Review) for Wednesday night’s tussle, the contest being highlighted with a prime-time broadcast on the MLB Network. Following a couple of low-scoring shutouts in the first two games, the scoreboard target has been set at 8½.
Toronto opened the set with a 3-0 win behind Alek Manoah on Monday, and New York returned the favor Tuesday when Nestor Cortes Jr. and four relievers combined on a 4-0 decision. Both contests turned on early 2-run homers, George Springer doing a 360 around the bases Monday while being serenaded by Bronx cheers and Aaron Hicks providing the pop on Tuesday.
The Blue Jays took the season series 11-8 a year ago, and visitors won 14 of the 19 matchups. Toronto went 8-2 in New York, a huge turnaround after the Yankees won 10 of the previous 12 on their home turf, and eight of the 10 games in the Bronx a year ago failed to reach the totals at top-rated sportsbooks.

Acquired from Minnesota at the trade deadline last July, Berrios started 12 games down the stretch for the Blue Jays, nine of them going into his quality start column. Anointed as Toronto’s Opening Day starter this year, Berrios suffered through the worst assignment of his career against the Rangers, getting just one out before Texas plated four runs.

Toronto mounted a huge comeback to win the game and take Berrios off the hook, and he’s hopeful of a much better showing this time around. Two of his starts for Toronto last summer came against the Yankees, and the Blue Jays won both while Berrios totaled 12.2 IP in the outings and allowed 5 ER.
After weather pushed his Opening Day start for New York back a day, Cole got in 68 pitches on Friday before being pulled in a 3-3 game against the Red Sox. A 2-run homer by Boston’s Rafael Devers in the first put Cole and the Yankees in an early hole, but they managed to climb out with a 6-5 decision in 11 innings to make good on the -175 chalk at top sportsbooks.
This will be Cole’s eighth go at the Blue Jays since joining New York for the 2020 campaign. He’s 4-1 in the previous seven with a solid 2.80 ERA, adding 43 strikeouts along the way in his 45 innings of work.
Umpire Notes, Bronx Forecast, and a Free Pick
Bruce Dreckman lines up to call balls and strikes for Paul Emmel’s crew on Wednesday. The man who wears No. 1 on his sleeve in the umpire program will be making his first plate assignment of 2022, and ran 17-11-1 O/U/P on the MLB odds a season ago. The Iowan had the Yankee Stadium dish twice in 2021, and finals split the totals.
Cloudy and a bit humid is the forecast for Wednesday evening, the thermometer in the mid-60s at first pitch with a slight chance of a passing shower as the game progresses. There’s also a 5-10 mile breeze from the south (right to left) in the mix.

Teammates for a couple of years in Houston, it could get interesting when Springer steps into the box to face Cole to begin this game. Springer is 4-6 lifetime against Cole, and the Toronto slugger is off to a good start to 2022. Look for Springer to provide some fireworks, but it won’t be enough to beat Cole and New York in a 5-3 final.
