Short slate of eight games Thursday around baseball – with MLB likely overshadowed by the NFL schedule release – and here are four player prop plays on the day with MLB odds from BetOnline (visit our BetOnline Review), one of BMR’s top-rated sportsbooks.
New York Yankees vs. Chicago White Sox
Thursday, May 12, 2022 – 08:10 PM EDT at Guaranteed Rate Field
White Sox Player Prop: Dylan Cease
- Over/Under 7.5 Strikeouts
White Sox Player Prop: Luis Robert
- Over/Under 0.5 Hits
Yankees Player Prop: Josh Donaldson
- Over/Under 0.5 Hits
This is easily the marquee series of the weekend and wouldn’t surprise me if it’s an ALDS or ALCS preview because the Yankees are favorites at the best sportsbooks to win the AL East (and I think they do) and the White Sox are the same in the AL Central (and I think they do despite a bit of an uneven start).
The Pale Hose don’t draw that well on the South Side of Chicago, but all four of these games should sell out or be close.
Chicago does catch one break here in that its game Wednesday was postponed – not due to weather but because the visiting Cleveland Guardians had a COVID outbreak.

Needless to say, that’s something to monitor today if a White Sox player or two tests positive, but it is believed the outbreak was limited to non-players with Cleveland. The Sox needed a gift day off to rest their taxed bullpen.
Instead of using Wednesday’s scheduled pitcher, Vince Velasquez, today they are going with young ace Dylan Cease. He’s 3-1 with a 2.38 ERA and 47 strikeouts in 34 innings. This after leading the AL in strikeouts per 9.0 IP (12.28) last season, establishing a White Sox single-season record and ranking third in strikeouts with 226.
Cease has struck out at least eight in every start but one this year. In eight career innings vs. the Yankees, he has 12 strikeouts.

This leads us to Josh Donaldson. The Yankees’ third baseman got Wednesday’s game against the Blue Jays off. The former AL MVP is a shell of his former self.
Acquired this spring from Minnesota, Donaldson is hitting just .215 with 29 strikeouts in 27 games. He has one extra-base hit this month. Against Cease's career, Donaldson is 2-for-10 with five strikeouts.
The hottest White Sox hitter right now is outfielder Luis Robert. He is 15-for-37 (.405 average) with 2 homers and 6 RBIs during his nine-game hitting streak. He hasn’t faced Yankees starter Luis Gil, who largely struggled in Triple-A this season and is getting a spot start.

MLB Prop Pick: Robert Over 0.5 Hits (-244) at BetOnline
MLB Prop Pick: Donaldson Under 0.5 Hits (+120) at BetOnline
Philadelphia Phillies vs. Los Angeles Dodgers
Thursday, May 12, 2022 - 10:10 PM EDT at Dodger Stadium
Dodgers Player Prop: Freddie Freeman
- At Least 2 Hits + Runs + RBIs
This is the only late-night game on the MLB schedule. How unpredictable can baseball be? The Dodgers are vastly better than the Pirates yet just lost two of three in Pittsburgh to start this week. It’s a long season and these lulls will happen. A return home, where LA is 10-2, should cure all ills.
The Phillies are 5-8 on the road but did start this week taking two of three in Seattle as Rhys Hoskins homered in every game. He is +300 to hit another tonight, but I don’t like that much.
What we do like is the Dodgers’ Freddie Freeman facing off against Philly starter Zack Wheeler, the 2021 NL Cy Young runner-up. The 31-year-old right-hander hasn’t pitched since May 4 against Texas because he landed on the COVID list but has been cleared to return.

Wheeler has been great at home this season with a 1.93 ERA but his lone road start was a disaster in Miami where he allowed 7 runs in three innings.
Freeman of course spent several years with the Braves, so he has faced Wheeler a ton from their NL East days and is 21-for-48 off him with 2 homers and 15 walks.
This price seems low for only 2 hits + runs + RBIs as Freeman only needs to get one hit and come around to score and we win (if you bump it up to 3, the price is +116 – might be worth it). He’s hitting .326 at Dodger Stadium and .324 against right-handed pitching.
MLB Prop Pick: Freeman at Least 2 Hits + Runs + RBIs (-157) at BetOnline
