Best MLB Player Props to Consider for May 23

There are 12 games around the majors on Monday but no matinees. Do note that Dodgers-Nationals could be impacted by rain, so we’ll stay away from that.

Here are four player prop plays on the day with MLB odds from BetOnline (visit our BetOnline Review), one of BMR’s top-rated sportsbooks.

Baltimore Orioles vs. New York Yankees

Monday, May 23, 2022 – 07:05 PM EDT at Yankee Stadium

Yankees Prop Bet: Gerrit Cole

  • Over/Under 8.5 Strikeouts
  • Yes/No To Record A Win

The Yankees might be rather ornery today as they were swept at home in a doubleheader on Sunday by the White Sox, marking the first series New York has lost at home this season. The only other series the Yanks lost? At Baltimore from April 15-17. The Orioles have been very competitive at home this season with a 12-11 record but are 5-14 on the road.

Thus, I fully expect New York to win here behind ace Gerrit Cole, who is a +750 third-favorite at the best sportsbooks and betting sites to win his first Cy Young Award.

Cole was a bit shaky in his first three starts of the season but has been dominant in his past five with a 1.67 ERA and 30.2 strikeout percentage to improve to 4-0 with a 2.89 ERA and 51 strikeouts in eight starts overall. The right-hander pitched in Baltimore last Wednesday and allowed 2 runs and 6 hits with 5 strikeouts over 7 innings in a victory.

Cole loves facing Baltimore, going 5-1 with a 1.57 ERA and 69 strikeouts in 51.2 career innings. I simply think 8.5 strikeouts is a shade too high. He has gone over 8.5Ks in only three games so far.

Orioles Prop Bet: Rougned Odor

  • Over/Under 0.5 Hits

It’s possible that the Orioles don’t start Rougned Odor but then obviously you would get your money back on this wager. The infielder does generally play every day and is on a seven-game hitting streak, although he’s batting just .217 on the season. Before that streak, he was at .189. Odor did have the walk-off RBI(s) on both Friday and Sunday vs. the Rays.

“I don't know what it is,” Orioles' outfielder Austin Hays said of Odor. “I think Roogie brings a lot of grit and just hard-nosed baseball to this team. You see how well he's been hitting late in games, big-time situations, pinch-hitting situations. I think that’s gone to the rest of the hitters in the lineup. I think he's a huge piece of that, just mindset-wise, and just never quitting.”

Odor simply can’t hit Cole (few can), going 2-for-20 with 8 strikeouts.

Toronto Blue Jays vs. St. Louis Cardinals

Monday, May 23, 2022 - 07:45 PM EDT at Busch Stadium

Cardinals Prop Bet: Paul Goldschmidt

  • Over/Under 0.5 Runs

This is one of the marquee series of this week and it could be a World Series preview. The Cardinals are 23-18 and second in the NL Central and the Blue Jays are 22-19 and third in the AL East. I’m not predicting they will meet in the Fall Classic, just that it’s possible. I do think both make the playoffs.

The longest hitting streak in the National League belongs to St. Louis first baseman Paul Goldschmidt at 14 straight, yet he was given Sunday off by first-year Cards manager Oliver Marmol. It didn’t end up mattering as St. Louis blew out the Pirates 18-4. It was such a rout that future Hall of Fame Cards catcher Yadier Molina took the mound for the first time in his career. He allowed 4 runs in one inning.

Goldschmidt also has reached base safely in his past 28 games. Since that began, he leads MLB in hits (46), batting average (.414), total bases (78), times on base (57), extra-base hits (20), doubles (14), and is 2nd in OBP (.463), and BABIP (.471). A total of 11 of his past 16 hits have gone for extra bases (3 HR, 6 2B). He is 2-for-6 career off Blue Jays starting pitcher Jose Berrios.

We will go with runs scored on a Goldy prop instead of any hits simply as the price is much better and obviously Goldschmidt could reach base on an error, fielder’s choice, etc., and come around to score without getting a hit.
