Chicago White Sox vs. Cleveland Guardians

Wednesday, July 13, 2022 – 07:10 PM ET at Progressive Field

Lucas Giolito

  • Over/Under 5.5 Strikeouts

The White Sox and Guardians played a doubleheader on Tuesday so both managers – Tony La Russa of Chicago and Terry Francona of Cleveland – may ask their starting pitchers to go an inning longer than perhaps normal simply to help the bullpens.

White Sox right-hander Lucas Giolito was among the Cy Young favorites entering the season but has been a massive disappointment at 5-5 with a 5.05 ERA; one game he will dominate, the next he will get shredded.

I have no interest in betting on his earned runs or hits allowed in this one because who knows which Giolito shows up, but he’s still striking out guys at a solid rate – it’s when he walks guys that he gets into trouble.

Giolito has gone 4-3 with a 1.93 ERA and 76 strikeouts in 11 career start vs. the Guardians. When Cleveland faced a similar nasty pitcher in Game 2 of the DH on Tuesday in Chicago’s Dylan Cease, he had nine strikeouts.

MLB Prop Pick: Lucas Giolito Over 5.5 Strikeouts (+100) at BetOnline

Aaron Civale

  • Over/Under 2.5 Earned Runs Allowed

Cleveland’s Aaron Civale was very good in 2021 but is 2-5 with a 6.28 ERA this year. He hasn’t faced the White Sox this year but more than a few Chicago batters have good splits off him. I'll elaborate on this pick with my next two MLB picks.

MLB Prop Pick: Aaron Civale Over 2.5 Earned Runs Allowed (+125) at BetOnline

White Sox Batters' Props

Tim Anderson

  • Over 1.5 Hits + Runs + RBIs

Eloy Jimenez

  • Over/Under 1.5 Total Bases

All-Star shortstop Tim Anderson is 7-for-17 with three homers, two doubles and five RBIs; Eloy Jimenez is 5-for-10 with two homers. Both players have these stats against Civale. Jimenez homered in his first game off a lengthy injured list stint on July 6 but hasn’t since.

He’s overdue – but we’ll do total bases just in case one of his long drives bounces off the wall and Jimenez has to settle for a double.

MLB Prop Pick: Tim Anderson Over 1.5 Hits + Runs + RBIs (-145) at BetOnline

MLB Prop Pick: Eloy Jimenez Over 1.5 Total Bases (+129) at BetOnline

Houston Astros vs. Los Angeles Angels

Wednesday, July 13, 2022 – 09:38 PM ET at Angel Stadium

Shohei Ohtani

  • Over/Under 6.5 Strikeouts
  • Over/Under 1.5 Earned Runs Allowed

It might be boring in that I always address when the Angels' Shohei Ohtani is on the mound, but it only happens once per week and we’ve been cashing big time on his exploits. This will be his final pitching start before the All-Star Game, in which he will start as a designated hitter and also probably pitch an inning for the American League at Dodger Stadium next Tuesday.

Ohtani, the Phenomenom

As per usual, I will not address Ohtani’s hitting when pitching because it’s so mind-blowing that he can do both well in the same game. His most recent start was last Wednesday in Miami when Ohtani became the first player in MLB history with at least:

  • 10 pitching strikeouts
  • 2 RBIs as a hitter
  • 1 stolen base as a hitter

The right-hander (bats left) is 5-0 with a 0.27 ERA (one earned run in 33.2 innings) in his past five outings. He carries a 28.2-inning scoreless streak into Wednesday.

AL MVP Favorite

If Ohtani dominates again tonight, he’s likely to pass struggling Aaron Judge as the AL MVP betting favorite at BMR’s top-rated books. Judge is currently +105 and Ohtani +150 to repeat.

Ohtani has been great vs. Houston this year with a 0.84 ERA and 21 strikeouts in 10.2 innings. He will catch a break on the mound in that Houston's biggest offensive threat, Yordan Alvarez is on the injured list with a hand injury and in fact, will have to miss the All-Star Game.

MLB Prop Pick: Shohei Ohtani Over 6.5 Strikeouts (-167) at BetOnline

MLB Prop Pick: Shohei Ohtani Under 1.5 Earned Runs Allowed (+110) at BetOnline

Cristian Javier

  • Over/Under 2.5 Earned Runs Allowed

Sounds like the Angels will be without superstar Mike Trout tonight. He is listed on prop options but left Tuesday’s game in the fifth inning with back spasms and is likely to sit out – but not expected to require an IL stint.

Thus, I like Houston starter Cristian Javier (6-4, 3.01 ERA) to also largely dominate. He sure did on July 1 when he faced the Angels, allowing one run and striking out a career-high 14 in seven innings. Overall, he has a 0.73 ERA vs. LAA this year in 12.1 innings

MLB Prop Pick: Cristian Javier Under 2.5 Earned Runs Allowed (-155) at BetOnline
