Atlanta Braves vs. Oakland A’s

Braves vs. Athletics:  What You Should Know

I generally try to avoid matinees in these prop MLB picks simply as it takes a while to write the story and then it has to be edited and posted at BMR, but I really have little choice today because there are a ton of afternoon games.

This is an all-rookie matchup on the mound, but I don’t care about Oakland’s Ken Waldichuk, who makes his second career start. This is regarding Braves right-hander Spencer Strider, now a heavy -525 favorite at BMR’s top-rated books over outfielder teammate Michael Harris to win NL Rookie of the Year.

Oakland is absolutely atrocious offensively with a .217 team batting average, worst in the majors. The A’s somehow managed to score nine runs against the Braves on Tuesday yet still lost, and sometimes Oakland would go a week without totaling nine runs.

That this is a day game after a night one only helps the pitchers with shadows, tired hitters, etc.

Braves' Prop Bet: Spencer Strider

  • Over/Under 1.5 Earned Runs Allowed
  • Over/Under 8.5 Strikeouts
  • To Record A Win

Strider (9-4, 2.67 ERA, 174 Ks) comes off one of the best outings by a rookie ever, 8 shutout innings, 2 hits allowed and a franchise-record 16 strikeouts in a win over Colorado. He was still hitting 98 mph on the gun in his final inning.

John Smoltz held the previous Atlanta record with 15 strikeouts in a nine-inning game against the Mets on April 10, 2005, and against Montreal on May 24, 1992. Warren Spahn had 15 strikeouts in a nine-inning game in 1960, when the franchise was in Milwaukee. Spahn also had 18 strikeouts in a game in 1952, but that came in extra innings.

Strider has allowed 1 earned run or fewer in 6 of his past 7 outings. Overall this season, he’s holding opponents to a .179 batting average with 13.7 Ks per nine innings. It would be a minor miracle for that Oakland offense to score more than one earned off him

I am going under 8.5 strikeouts, though, as that’s a big number and the Braves might pull Strider early if way ahead to save innings on his arm.

Athletics' Prop Bet: Ramon Laureano

  •   Over/Under 0.5 Hits

You probably can’t go wrong going under hits on many A’s players today, but we’ll go with outfielder Ramon Laureano.

He returned from the injured list Tuesday and did have a knock but is batting only .224 on the year.

Miami Marlins vs. Philadelphia Phillies

Wednesday, September 7, 2022 - 06:45 PM EDT at Citizens Bank Park

Marlins vs. Phillies: What You Should Know

The Marlins are the National League version of the Oakland A’s in that they also are laughable offensively. On Tuesday, Miami lost 3-2 in Philadelphia for its eighth straight defeat, and the Marlins have not topped two runs in any of those games. That’s almost impossible.

Injuries haven’t helped as All-Star second baseman Jazz Chisholm Jr. hasn’t played since June 28 with a stress fracture in his lower back. Outfielder/DH Jorge Soler, who was on pace for a 30-home run season, has played in five games due to two separate injuries since that date.

In the Marlins’ first 73 games of the season, through the last game Chisholm and Soler played together June 28, the team averaged 4.4 runs per game. Since then? 2.5 runs per game with a batting average of .206.

Phillies' Prop Bet: Bailey Falter

  • Over/Under 2.5 Earned Runs Allowed
  • To Record A Win

Philadelphia lefty Bailey Falter (3-3, 4.08) comes off his best month of the year as he was 3-0 with a 2.45 ERA in August.

He had been in the minor leagues, but was recalled due to other injuries in the rotation. The Marlins have not seen him.

Marlins' Prop Bet: Rhys Hoskins

  • Over/Under 1.5 Total Bases

It’s lefty Trevor Rogers (4-10, 5.57 ERA) for the Marlins. He’s 0-2 with an 11.91 ERA in 11.1 innings this year against the Phillies.

First baseman Rhys Hoskins hammers Rogers career, going 7-for-16 with three homers, a double and eight RBIs. Hoskins is hitting .304 against southpaws in 2022 compared to .230 against right-handers.
