The Chicago White Sox face essentially a must-win game Tuesday against the visiting Cleveland Guardians to keep their playoff hopes alive.

Houston Astros vs. Tampa Bay Rays

Tuesday, September 20, 2022 – 06:40 PM EDT at Tropicana Field

What You Should Know

Houston won at the Rays on Monday night 4-0 to clinch its fifth AL West title in the past six years. The Astros won for the eighth time in nine games and improved the AL's best record to 97-51. A major league-best 16-4 (.800) in their last 20 games, the Astros are now assured of a first-round bye in the playoffs. They haven’t clinched the AL’s top seed yet, but that’s going to happen.

I wouldn’t normally recommend betting good props on a starting pitcher facing that loaded Houston lineup but am almost positive that manager Dusty Baker will rest a handful of key guys (Jose Altuve, Kyle Tucker, Yordan Alvarez, etc.) tonight after clinching the division.

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts did the same thing last week with Mookie Betts, Trea Turner, Freddie Freeman and Justin Turner.

Rays' Prop Bet: Shane McClanahan

  • Over/Under 1.5 Earned Runs Allowed
  • Over/Under 4.5 Strikeouts
  • To Record A Win

Because of what we mentioned before, hammering Shane McClanahan (12-5, 2.13 ERA) props seem wise. The 25-year-old lefty, who probably finishes third in the AL Cy Young voting, returned from a short stint on the injured list last Thursday and shut down a stellar Blue Jays lineup over 5 innings.

McClanahan should be allowed to go deeper tonight. He ranks among AL leaders this season in ERA (second), opponents’ batting (.184, second), strikeout rate (32.3%, third), and bWAR for pitchers (4.4, sixth). It’s his first-ever start vs. Houston in the regular season.

Definitely like the Rays to win tonight with Houston essentially punting and Tampa Bay still fighting for a Wild-Card spot. Great price on McClanahan personally to get a W.

Cleveland Guardians vs. Chicago White Sox

Tuesday, September 20, 2022 - 08:10 PM EDT at Guaranteed Rate Field

What You Should Know

This is easily the biggest series in the majors early this week. Only the division champion from the AL Central is going to make the playoffs – i.e., the second-place team won’t have a good enough record for a Wild-Card spot.

There are no longer Game 163 tiebreakers should two teams tie for a division title. It now goes by head-to-head records. Cleveland is 9-7 against Chicago this season and leads the White Sox by four games. Thus, one win in this three-game set gives the Guardians the huge tiebreaker. The Pale Hose basically has to sweep this. Cleveland is currently -1200 to win the Central and Chicago +900.

White Sox' Prop Bet: Dylan Cease

  • To Have 5+ Strikeouts & White Sox To Win

Do think the White Sox win tonight behind ace Dylan Cease, who is a +390 second favorite at BMR’s best sportsbooks to win the Cy Young Award (looks like Houston’s Justin Verlander has it sewn up at -370).

Cease (14-7, 2.16 ERA) ranks among the American League leaders in strikeouts (second, 214), opponents’ average (third, .187), and strikeouts per 9.0 IP (third, 11.53).

The right-hander is 10-5 with a 1.35 ERA, .168 opponents’ average and 143 strikeouts in his last 20 starts and has a 2.12 ERA in 17 innings this year against Cleveland.

Guardians' Prop Bet: Jose Ramirez

  • Over/Under 0.5 Hits

One Guardians batter who has had career success vs. Cease is All-Star Jose Ramirez, who is 5-for-15 with two doubles.

MLB Prop Pick: Ramirez Over 0.5 Hits (-170) at BetOnline

White Sox' Prop Bet: Eloy Jimenez

  • Over/Under 1.5 Total Bases

The Guardians will activate Aaron Civale (2-6, 5.40 ERA) off the injured list to make his first start Aug. 28 and he’s 0-3 with a 6.43 on the road this year.

Sox slugger Eloy Jimenez is batting .357 since the beginning of August and .336 at home this season. He's also 5-for-11 career with two homers against Civale.

Jimenez ranks among the AL leaders since the All-Star break in on-base percentage (third), batting average (fourth), OPS (tied for fifth) and slugging percentage (eighth).
