Best MLB Player Props for May 20

It’s a full slate of 15 games Friday around the majors, although we will steer clear of Diamondbacks-Cubs because it’s a matinee and Mets-Rockies because the weather (snow!) may be an issue in Denver.

Here are three player prop plays on the day with MLB odds from BetOnline (visit our BetOnline Review), one of BMR’s top-rated sportsbooks.

Chicago White Sox vs. New York Yankees

Friday, May 20, 2022 – 07:05 PM EDT at Yankee Stadium

Yankees Prop Bet: Giancarlo Stanton

  • Over/Under 0.5 RBIs

First game of a series between these likely AL division winners – New York took three of four last weekend at the White Sox.

We get you these stories as early as possible so you can plan your wagers, but sometimes a player is going to get a night off that we didn’t see coming. That was the case for Yankees' slugger Giancarlo Stanton on Wednesday in Baltimore when we really liked him against O’s pitcher Jordan Lyles.

No way Stanton sits Friday (barring a positive COVID test) and we’re going back to him. Stanton was 2-for-3 with a homer, 3 RBIs and a run scored in Thursday’s loss in Baltimore. It was his 11th homer of the season and fifth in his last eight games. It was also his fourth game this season with at least 3 RBIs.

He’s second in the majors with 35 RBIs, one behind the Mets’ Pete Alonso. In the past seven days, Stanton is hitting .391 with 2 homers and 7 RBIs. Against White Sox starter Dallas Keuchel's career, he's 6-for-11 with 2 homers and 5 RBIs.

Yankees Prop Bet: Nestor Cortes

  • Yes/No To Record A Win

As for the Yankees lefty Nestor Cortes, he was an unknown journeyman with terrible career numbers entering the 2021 season with the Yankees.

But suddenly has become one of the American League’s best pitchers and a legitimate Cy Young candidate – currently +1200 at the best sportsbooks and betting sites.

Last Sunday in Chicago, Cortes held the White Sox to a run and 3 hits over 8 innings. It was his 16th straight start allowing 3 earned runs or fewer, tied for the second-longest such streak in Yankees history (the record is 20), and the Yankees have had a few good pitchers over the years. At home this season, Cortes has a 1.00 ERA in three starts.

Seattle Mariners vs. Boston Red Sox

Friday, May 20, 2022 - 07:10 PM EDT at Fenway Park

Red Sox Prop Bet: Trevor Story

  • Over/Under 0.5 Runs Scored

One of the big free-agent busts from this past offseason had been the Red Sox signing former Rockies All-Star shortstop Trevor Story to a six-year, $160 million deal.

He had really been struggling at the plate, entering Thursday batting just .205 with an OPS of .613, 2 homers, and 16 RBIs. Some guys can’t handle playing in a more pressure-filled environment like Boston or New York. Or perhaps Story was a bit messed up at the plate because he has been playing second base instead of shortstop.

When a guy like Story gets hot, though, you ride him. He blew up in Thursday’s 12-6 win over Seattle going 4-for-4 with 3 home runs, 7 RBIs, and 5 runs. He became the second player in Red Sox history to score 5 or more runs, hit 3 or more home runs, and have 7 or more RBIs. Jim Tabor did it in 1939.

Story jumped his batting average to .230 and his OPS to .730. It was the second three-homer game of Story’s career and the 35th in Red Sox history.

In his past 40 plate appearances starting on May 10, Story has slashed .333/.425/.818 with 5 homers and 6 walks. The Mariners start lefty and 2021 Cy Young winner Robbie Ray tonight, and Story is a career .296 hitter off him with 3 homers, 4 RBIs, and 10 walks in 27 at-bats. Thus, at worse, we think Story gets on base a few times tonight and scores a minimum of one run.

Mariners Prop Bet: Robbie Ray

  • Over/Under 2.5 Earned Runs

Ray always had great stuff but finally, put it together last year with the Blue Jays in winning the Cy Young Award. That got him a five-year, $180 million contract with Seattle in free agency.

It’s starting to look as if Ray was a bit of a one-year wonder. He hasn’t been terrible, but a 4-3 record and 4.62 ERA is not what the Mariners were expecting.

On the road, his ERA is 5.55 in four starts, and he has allowed at least 3 earned in three straight away starts.
