We hit three of four player props around Major League Baseball on a short Thursday slate. Every team is in action Friday (the 13th) and here are four player prop plays on the day with MLB odds from BetOnline (visit our BetOnline Review), one of BMR’s top-rated sportsbooks.
Toronto Blue Jays vs. Tampa Bay Rays
Friday, May 13, 2022 – 07:10 PM EDT at Tropicana Field
Blue Jays Player Prop: Kevin Gausman
- Over/Under 1.5 Walks
Everyone loves the strikeouts when it comes to pitchers, but we rarely talk about walks – and, frankly, this might be the only time this season I address how many walks a pitcher has.
Kevin Gausman had a breakout 2021 season with the San Francisco Giants going 14-6 with a 2.81 ERA, 227 strikeouts, and 50 walks – a K/BB ratio of 4.5. Not bad.
Some thought Gausman was a one-year wonder and shied away from giving him big money this offseason, but not the Jays. To replace departed 2021 Cy Young winner Robbie Ray, Toronto gave Gausman a five-year, $110 million deal, and thus far it looks like a steal.
The right-hander is 3-1 with a 2.13 ERA and 46 strikeouts in 38 innings. Great numbers. But what’s astounding and Greg Maddux-like: One walk. One! And it just happened in his last start in the 137th batter he faced this year: Cleveland’s Franmil Reyes.
In fact, Reyes was the first batter who even reached a 3-0 count on Gausman, and it seemed to spook the pitcher as he then did walk him on four pitches.
FYI: The MLB record to start a season in terms of most strikeouts without a walk is 58 by Milwaukee’s Corbin Burnes last year on the way to the NL Cy Young. Gausman certainly could win the AL version this year.
The Rays are among the MLB leaders in batter strikeouts and aren’t very patient as a team overall. They have walked 99 times in 32 games. Because Gausman has been in the NL, few Rays have faced him.
MLB Prop Pick: Gausman Under 1.5 Walks (-225) at BetOnline
Los Angeles Angels vs. Oakland Athletics
Friday, May 13, 2022 - 09:40 PM EDT at Oakland Coliseum
Angels Player Prop: Mike Trout
- At Least 2 Hits + Runs + RBIs
BetOnline allows you to change this total if you want. If you want to try your luck at 3, that pays +106 and 4 does +158. I’ll take the safer route with 2.
It’s almost easy to forget how good Trout was from 2012 to 19 when he won three AL MVP Awards and seemed to finish second the years he didn’t win. COVID ruined everyone’s 2020 season, and Trout was limited to 36 games last year due to injury. Well, he’s back to MVP form in hitting .337 with 9 homers, 19 RBIs, 25 runs scored, and an OPS of 1.188 that leads the league.
Trout should be fresh as well because he essentially got Wednesday’s game vs. the Rays off (did pinch-hit and walked) and then the Halos were off Thursday. Sometimes a couple of days off can really supercharge a player.
You may want to back a few Angels hitter props today because they are facing struggling A’s right-hander Daulton Jefferies (1-5, 5.22). He started the season strong but has allowed 15 runs over 14 innings in his past three outings. Trout has not faced him.

Philadelphia Phillies vs. Los Angeles Dodgers
Friday, May 13, 2022 - 10:10 PM EDT at Dodger Stadium
Phillies Player Prop: Bryce Harper
- Over/Under 0.5 Hits
- Over/Under 0.5 Home Runs
We won an MLB prop pick on this game Thursday in the Phillies’ 9-7 upset: The Dodgers’ Freddie Freeman with at least 2 hits + runs + RBIs at -157. We said that he only needed one hit and come around to score to win that prop and that’s exactly what happened as Freeman was 1-for-5 with a run.
A big reason the Phillies won that game was because of two-time NL MVP Bryce Harper. He actually has a torn UCL in his elbow so he basically can’t throw the ball or play outfield.
Harper will be limited to designated hitter for at least a month – just think if the universal DH hadn’t been instituted this season. Philadelphia would be really up the creek. Whether or not such surgery is in Harper’s future remains to be seen.
It's not too often we get to see MVPs face off at the plate because only two active pitchers have won an MVP, and one of those is Dodgers lefty and also three-time Cy Young winner Clayton Kershaw (the other is Houston’s Justin Verlander), who is on the mound here.
Kershaw has been absolute murder on lefties like Harper in his career. Shoot, maybe Harper gets tonight off (doubtful) as he’s 5-for-27 with 14 strikeouts career vs. Kershaw. I wish there was an Over/Under strikeout prop for Harper.
MLB Prop Pick: Harper Under 0.5 Hits (+125)
MLB Prop Pick: Under 0.5 Home Runs (-650)
