The Seattle Mariners need every win they can get to end the longest playoff drought in MLB history, and we think they get one tonight in Oakland behind Robbie Ray.

Seattle Mariners vs. Oakland Athletics

Wednesday, September 21, 2022 – 09:40 PM EDT at Oakland Coliseum

It has been a good week so far for the Seattle Mariners, who last made the playoffs in 2001 – the longest drought in the major leagues. While Seattle is just 1-1 this week and was a big upset loser in Oakland on Tuesday, the Baltimore Orioles have been upset in back-to-back home games by the terrible Detroit Tigers.

Seattle holds the final AL Wild-Card spot, and Baltimore is essentially the only team that can catch the M’s but is now five games back. It’s basically over.

Robbie Ray

  • Over/Under 1.5 Earned Runs Allowed
  • Over/Under 6.5 Strikeouts
  • To Record A Win?

I fully expect Seattle to win tonight behind 2021 AL Cy Young winner Robbie Ray. The lefty is 12-10 with a 3.72 ERA and 194 strikeouts. Good numbers but perhaps not quite up to the huge free-agent contract he signed and nowhere near what he did last year with Toronto.

We haven’t been shy this year about backing pitchers when facing the punchless A’s, who are hitting an MLB-worst .216 and are second-to-last in runs. This will be Ray’s fourth start this year against Oakland, and he is 1-1 with a 2.41 ERA with 28 strikeouts, including a season-high 12 on July 3.

Chad Pinder

  • Over/Under 0.5 Total Bases

Good luck naming even three Oakland batters, but we found one to fade tonight: Left fielder Chad Pinder, who actually has been one of the team’s best hitters at .231 with 12 homers and 42 RBIs – which isn’t saying much.

He is 0-for-11 career off Ray with six strikeouts.

Julio Rodriguez

  • Over/Under 1.5 Total Bases

Mariners outfielder and lock AL Rookie of the Year Julio Rodriguez returned from a three-game injury absence on Tuesday and was 0-for-4, but there figured to be some rust.

He’s still batting nearly .400 over his past 10 games with five homers, two doubles, seven RBIs, and nine runs scored. Against A’s starter James Kaprielian, Rodriguez is 6-for-12 with two triples and a homer.

Los Angeles Angels vs. Texas Rangers

Wednesday, September 21, 2022 – 08:05 PM EDT at Globe Life Field

Angels vs. Rangers: What You Should Know

The Angels will miss the playoffs for an eighth straight season and of the 18 active players who have won an MVP, only Shohei Ohtani and Mike Trout have never won a playoff game.

The Halos have not been to the postseason since 2014 nor won a playoff game since 2009. Their lone postseason trip of the Trout era was an ALDS sweep at the hands of the Kansas City Royals in 2014.

Shohei Ohtani and Mike Trout

  • Over/Under 1.5 Total Bases

Definitely some mixed career hitting splits for Ohtani (who is going to finish second for AL MVP this season behind Aaron Judge) and Trout against Texas Rangers starter Dane Dunning. He has been a lot better at home (3-2, 3.59 ERA) than on the road (0-6, 5.62 ERA) but hasn’t been good anywhere this month with a 7.53 ERA in three outings.

Trout is 5-for-12 career off him with two solo homers, while Ohtani is just 3-for-16 with five strikeouts.

Ohtani is one home run shy of reaching 35 this season. Along with Trout (35), it would be the third season in Angels history with multiple players hitting 35+ HR, joining the 2000 (Garret Anderson, Troy Glaus & Mo Vaughn) and 2015 (Trout & Albert Pujols) teams. I just don’t think Ohtani does it tonight.

Tucker Davidson

  • Over/Under 2.5 Earned Runs Allowed
  • Over/Under 3.5 Hits Allowed

No hitting prop picks tonight for any members of the Rangers simply as none of them have seen Angels lefty Tucker Davidson, a Texas native who is an ugly 2-6 with a 6.96 ERA.

In two starts this month, he’s 0- with an 11.88 ERA.
