Some people wonder why the two MLB stadiums in Florida, otherwise known as the Sunshine State, have roofs (retractable in Miami). It’s because of days like Friday when it’s supposed to rain huge in the southern half of the state due to a tropical storm. Here are five player prop plays for Friday with MLB odds from BetOnline, one of BMR’s top-rated sportsbooks.

Detroit Tigers vs. New York Yankees

Friday, June 03, 2022 – 07:05 PM EDT at Yankee Stadium

Gerrit Cole

  • Over/Under 8.5 Strikeouts
  • To Record a Win?

This is the clear mismatch of the day with Tigers rookie Elvin Rodriguez (0-0, 6.17 ERA) opposed by one of the AL Cy Young favorites in New York’s Gerrit Cole (4-1, 3.12 ERA, 72 strikeouts).

New York starters lead the AL with a collective ERA of just 2.67 and Cole is the most talented of them. He struggled early this season and was terrible in Detroit on April 19 lasting just 1.2 innings with five walks and two runs allowed.

He has been, otherwise, tremendous since going 4-1 with a 2.33 ERA and 60 strikeouts in his last seven starts. In five May starts, he struck out 45 batters and his 72 are sixth-most in the majors. Cole is also on an extended five days of rest and historically he has been much better with that extra day.

It’s not exactly easy to strike out nine major league batters in a game – Cole has fallen under that number in five of 10 starts. Computer simulations have him finishing with 7.6.

That said, I absolutely expect the Yankees to win today. They just swept a three-game home set vs. the Angels with a doubleheader sweep on Thursday. Yankees starting pitchers have tossed at least six innings in a season-high seven straight starts and have allowed three earned or fewer in 47-of-51 starts this season and two earned or fewer in 38 of those.

Javy Baez

  • Over/Under 0.5 Hits

It is expected that Tigers shortstop Javy Baez will be in the lineup, but he has been a $140 million free-agent bust. Detroit gave him the past couple of days as a “mental break”.

Baez is hitting just .197 on the season with a microscopic .236 on-base percentage. In May, he hit .159. He has struck out 41 times in 40 games. Career against Cole, Baez is an ugly 3-for-17 with seven strikeouts. Maybe Baez won’t want to play!

MLB Prop Pick: Javy Baez Under 0.5 Hits (+115) with BetOnline

New York Mets vs. Los Angeles Dodgers

Friday, June 03, 2022 – 10:10 PM EDT at Dodger Stadium

Francisco Lindor vs. Mookie Betts

  • Most Total Bases from Hits
  • Mookie Betts Over/Under 0.5 Runs Scored

Mets vs. Dodgers Highlights

Easily the marquee series of the weekend and quite possibly an NLCS preview with the Mets and Dodgers have the two best records in the National League.

Baseball is a funny game as the Dodgers were swept at home by the awful Pirates early this week and the Mets entered this series having won six straight and averaging 8.2 runs in that stretch.

So naturally, the Dodgers beat the Mets on Thursday, 2-0. New York was the only major league team that hadn't been blanked this season. Perhaps one reason the Mets were shut out was that All-Star shortstop Francisco Lindor didn’t play.

Franciso Lindor Injury Update

I swear MLB players get injured in weirder ways than in any other sport (to be fair, they do play more games, travel more, etc.), and Lindor was a late scratch Thursday because he pinched his finger while closing a door in his hotel room.

Lindor's right middle finger was swollen and the nail bed was blackened. He said the injury affected his ability to throw and grip a bat.

It's nothing serious and Manager Buck Showalter briefly considered using Lindor as the designated hitter on Thursday. He’ll be in there tonight by all accounts even if it’s at DH.

Lindor Stats

  • Lindor is hitting .261 with eight homers and 43 RBIs and has at least one hit and one RBI in three straight.
  • Lindor is a 0-for-3 career off tonight’s Dodgers start Tyler Anderson.

Mookie Betts Analysis

The new NL MVP betting favorite at BMR's top-rated sportsbooks and betting sites is Dodgers outfielder Mookie Betts, and that dude is raking. He was 2-for-4 with an RBI on Thursday, his third multi-hit game in his past four. Betts is a 1-for-4 career off Mets starter Chris Bassitt.

As for runs scored, Mookie leads the majors by far with 51 and has scored at least one in 25 of the last 33 games. The Dodgers are 27-7 when he scores a run. All we need is a homer, and we surely win both these props (obviously the run one), and Mookie leads the NL with 16 dingers.
