Usually, on Friday, every team in the MLB is in action barring weather, but two of the 30 aren’t playing today. That would be the Twins and Tigers as they open a series on Saturday.
Los Angeles Angels vs. Atlanta Braves
Friday, July 22, 2022 – 07:20 PM EDT at Truist Park
- Over/Under 7.5 Strikeouts
- Over/Under 2.5 Earned Runs Allowed
One quick note about this game: Angels star Mike Trout is on the injured list and not eligible to be activated until Saturday, so he obviously will miss this interleague matchup. Actually, it really doesn’t need to even be called interleague at this point because the National League now has the designated hitter so there’s no difference.
With Trout missing and the fact the Braves are such a good team, I don’t think Ohtani wins tonight – at least not personally gets the W. But we do expect another strong night on the mound.
Remember, American League manager Dusty Baker wanted to start Ohtani both on the mound and at DH for Tuesday’s All-Star Game, but Ohtani said he preferred not to pitch at all to rest his arm for the second half so he didn’t.
Shohei Ohtani Makes History
He will be well-rested in that regard as the AL MVP betting favorite last took the mound on July 13 and allowed just one run over six innings with 12 strikeouts in beating Houston. Ohtani became the fourth pitcher of all time to go 6-0 with at least 58 strikeouts and two or fewer earned runs allowed in each game of a six-game span, joining:
- Johan Santana (2004)
- R.A. Dickey (2012)
- Clayton Kershaw (2014)
Santana, Dickey and Kershaw all won Cy Young Awards in those seasons. In addition, Ohtani has joined strikeout king Nolan Ryan as the only two pitchers in Angels history to record at least 10 strikeouts in four consecutive pitching appearances.

MLB Prop Pick: Shohei Ohtani Under 2.5 Earned Runs Allowed (-110) at BetOnline
- Over/Under 1.5 Total Bases
It's almost boring that I back Ohtani every time he takes the mound but, then again, winning money isn’t boring. I do like one batter to have a decent night against him: Red-hot Braves third baseman Austin Riley. While the All-Star hasn’t faced Ohtani, Riley is batting .400 in 70 July at-bats with nine homers and six doubles.

Colorado Rockies vs. Milwaukee Brewers
Friday, July 22, 2022 – 08:10 PM EDT at American Family Field
- Over/Under 7.5 Strikeouts
- Over/Under 18.5 Outs Recorded
- To Record A Win?
This is the mismatch of the night with the Brewers as -280 favorites behind reigning NL Cy Young Award winner Corbin Burnes. I absolutely think Milwaukee wins this game and Burnes personally gets a W, but I’m not sure the Brewers should be nearly -300 against anyone as they are only 21-19 at home, although Colorado is an ugly 15-27 away.
Burnes could repeat as Cy Young's winner as he’s the second favorite currently at +600. Miami’s Sandy Alcantara is the favorite at -110. Burnes opted to skip the All-Star Game to rest up for the second half. He’s 7-4 with a:
- 2.14 ERA
- 0.90 WHIP
- 144 strikeouts
- 113.2 innings
The right-hander may well finish with better numbers than last year:
- 11-5 Record
- 2.43 ERA
- 0.94 WHIP
- 234 Strikeouts
- 167 Innings
Burnes hasn’t personally lost since June 9 vs. Philadelphia and in three July starts has allowed just two earned runs and eight hits with 25 strikeouts in 20.1 innings.

- Over/Under 0.5 Runs Scored
Colorado per usual is a very good offensive team at home in the thin air of Denver. On the road, they are atrocious. The Rockies lead the MLB in home batting average at .287 and in runs with 300, but away those numbers are .233 and 127.
I expect a blowout against Rockies starter Antonio Senzatela, who is 0-3 with a 6.86 ERA on the road this year and will be activated off the injured list. Kolten Wong is 6-for-15 career off him with two doubles. Wong over 0.5 hits is too expensive, so we’ll just assume he gets on a few times and comes around to score at least once for our last MLB pick of the day.
