Best MLB Player Props for August 5

Houston’s Justin Verlander was good to us Thursday, and we like another AL Cy Young contender for a big game on Friday. Here are today’s player props with MLB odds from BetOnline (visit our BetOnline Review), one of BMR’s best sportsbooks.

Chicago White Sox vs. Texas Rangers

Friday, August 05, 2022 – 08:05 PM EDT at Globe Life Field

What You Should Know

On Thursday, we addressed AL Cy Young favorite Justin Verlander in this space as Houston visited Cleveland and we won on Verlander under 2.5 earned runs allowed (-130) and to record a win at (-110).

Verlander has been awesome, but the best pitcher in Major League Baseball since early June has been Chicago White Sox right-hander Dylan Cease, who somehow was not named to the AL All-Star team.

White Sox's Prop Bet: Dylan Cease

  • Over/Under 7.5 Strikeouts
  • Over/Under 1.5 Earned Runs Allowed
  • Over/Under 17.5 Outs Recorded
  • To Record A Win?

Dylan Cease has always had great stuff but can get a little distracted on the mound. If something went wrong, he might lose focus and it would snowball. For example, on May 24 he allowed 7 runs and 8 hits in just 3 innings of a blowout home loss to Boston. Amazingly, the right-hander hasn’t allowed more than one earned run in a start since.

Only Cease and two-time Cy Young Award winner Jacob deGrom of the Mets in 2021 have had a streak of 12 straight starts allowing one earned or fewer since 1913 (and not including openers). Cease was the AL Pitcher of the Month for both June and July. In July, he was 5-1 with a 0.76 ERA (3 earned runs in 35.2 innings), a .188 opponents’ average, and 40 strikeouts over six starts.

He is now a +450 third favorite at the top-rated sportsbooks to win the Cy Young. The White Sox haven’t had a winner in nearly three decades (Jack McDowell in 1993). Cease has not faced Texas this year, and I think that actually works in his favor.

I am going to go under 7.5 strikeouts, though, and I’ll tell you why: Chicago didn’t use a single reliever in Thursday’s loss, so Tony La Russa may only let Cease go 6 innings simply to save wear and tear and keep him as fresh as possible down the stretch.

Rangers' Prop Bet: Glenn Otto

  • Over/Under 2.5 Earned Runs Allowed

It certainly looks to be a pitching mismatch tonight as Cease is opposed by struggling Glenn Otto of the Rangers.

The 26-year-old has a 6.42 ERA in his two big-league seasons and is 2-3 with a 7.39 ERA at home this season in seven starts. He has allowed at least 3 earned in six of his past seven.

White Sox's Prop Bet: Jose Abreu

  • Over/Under 1.5 Total Bases

The one hitter prop we like is Chicago’s Jose Abreu, who was 1-for-3 with a run scored Thursday.

He is hitting .374 with 12 doubles, 5 home runs, and 23 RBIs over his last 36 games. His .356 road batting average leads the American League, and August is usually his best month: His 58 home runs in August are 17 more than any other month and his 172 RBI are 29 more.

Abreu hasn’t faced Otto.

San Diego Padres vs. Los Angeles Dodgers

Friday, August 05, 2022 - 10:10 PM EDT at Dodger Stadium

What You Should Know

This is easily the best rivalry in Major League Baseball right now and it only got better when the Padres this week threw down the gauntlet by acquiring Juan Soto (the Dodgers also wanted him), Josh Bell from Washington, and Brandon Drury from Cincinnati.

And it will get even better when Fernando Tatis Jr. makes his season debut for the Friars off injury.

Will the Padres catch the Dodgers in the NL West? Absolutely not, but I'm here hoping these clubs meet in the NLDS (San Diego would have to get through the Wild-Card Series) because that would be epic.

Dodgers' Prop Bet: Tony Gonsolin

  • Over/Under 2.5 Earned Runs Allowed

The unlikely ace this season for Los Angeles has been Tony Gonsolin (12-1, 2.41 ERA), but I think he’s starting to regress and has dropped to -3000 to win the NL Cy Young Award (not happening).

Gonsolin has been a bit lucky this season in benefiting from a .208 BABIP and 83.5% left on base level. In his past three starts, the right-hander has a 6.75 ERA and 1.44 WHIP.

He might be tired, having already thrown by far a career-high in innings.

Padres' Prop Bet: Jurickson Profar

  • Over/Under 0.5 Hits

Soto is 1-for-4 with a triple off him, but the Padres batter I like tonight is Jurickson Profar, who has been leading off. He’s 5-for-7 with three doubles career off Gonsolin.

MLB Prop Pick: Jurickson Profar Over 0.5 Hits (-197) at BetOnline

Dodgers' Prop Bet: Mookie Betts

  • At Least 2 Hits + Runs + RBIs

It’s lefty Sean Manaea (6-5, 4.25) for the Dodgers, and he has been very hit or miss. He was rocked by LA for 7 runs back in April in his lone 2022 start against the Dodgers.

Mookie Betts hits him better than any Dodger, going 7-for-19 with a double, triple, 2 homers, and 5 RBIs.
