Best MLB Player Prop Bets for July 14

Thursdays are often when managers may rest a key player or two ahead of a weekend series, but that might not be the case here because the All-Star break arrives after Sunday’s action.

Here are today’s player props with MLB odds from BetOnline (visit our BetOnline Review), one of BMR’s top-rated sportsbooks.

San Diego Padres vs. Colorado Rockies

Padres vs. Rockies: What You Should Know

Series finale between NL West rivals and on a hot day in Denver. The balls should be flying at Coors Field.

It has been a very entertaining series with comebacks galore. On Wednesday, the Friars had ace and Cy Young contender Joe Musgrove on the mound.

Frankly, I thought the game was over with San Diego leading 3-0 entering the bottom of the fifth, but the Rockies scored in every inning they batted going forward and won 10-6.

Padres Prop Bet: Blake Snell

  • Over/Under 5.5 Strikeouts

Blake Snell, the former Cy Young winner, wasn’t good for a while this season but has been much better of late with just 2 earned runs and 7 hits allowed over his past 11 innings with 23 strikeouts.

Snell still has nasty stuff, he just gets wild at times. In 10.2 innings this year against the Rockies, he has 12 strikeouts.

The Padres need him to go 6 today because the bullpen has been taxed, and I think Snell gets at least 6 Ks.

MLB Prop Pick: Snell Over 5.5 Strikeouts (+110) at BetOnline

Rockies Prop Bet: CJ Cron

  • Over/Under 1.5 Total Bases

Rockies All-Star 1B/DH CJ Cron wasn’t in the starting lineup with minor wrist soreness but did pinch-hit and had a hit and run scored.

That guy is having a very under-the-radar spectacular season and is expected back in the starting lineup today.

The Padres start lefty Blake Snell (1-5, 4.66 ERA), and Cron likes facing him, going 7-for-15 with a double, homer, and 5 RBIs.

MLB Prop Pick: Cron Over 1.5 Total Bases (+100) at BetOnline

Padres Prop Bet: Manny Machado

  • At Least 2 Hits + Runs + RBIs

It's lefty Kyle Freeland (4-7, 4.70) on the bump for Colorado, and I really have no opinion on how he will fare today.

The Denver native had been much better at home in previous seasons but not this year with a 5.23 ERA. He is allowing opponents to hit .300 with an .869 OPS in nine home starts this season compared to a .243 average and .683 OPS on the road.

Padres star Manny Machado is 10-for-32 career off him with 6 doubles and 2 homers.

Houston Astros vs. Los Angeles Angels

Thursday, July 14, 2022 - 08:07 PM EDT at Angel Stadium

Astros vs. Angels: What You Should Know

We went 2-1 on props in this matchup Wednesday.

We hit both on Angels pitcher Shohei Ohtani: Over 6.5 strikeouts and under 1.5 earned runs allowed as his mound dominance continued by allowing one run with 12 strikeouts over 6 innings in the Angels’ 7-1 win.

Unfortunately, Astros pitcher Cristian Javier allowed over 2.5 earned runs (we went under) against a lineup missing Mike Trout. Javier’s defense didn’t help him much.

Angels Prop Bet: Shohei Ohtani

  • Over/Under 0.5 Hits

Incidentally, Shohei Ohtani is now the +105 MVP favorite at the best sportsbooks and betting sites, passing the Yankees’ Aaron Judge (+165). To win the Cy Young, Ohtani is down to a +650 third favorite.

He has joined the following pitchers who have recorded double-digit strikeouts and allowed no more than one run through four consecutive starts:

  • Sandy Koufax
  • Nolan Ryan
  • Ron Guidry
  • Hideo Nomo
  • Pedro Martinez
  • Randy Johnson
  • Corey Kluber
  • Chris Sale
  • Max Scherzer

Oh, and Ohtani had 2 hits, 2 RBIs, and a run scored Wednesday. The guy is not human. Alas, I don’t like him much tonight at the plate as Ohtani is 3-for-23 career with 8 strikeouts against excellent Astros lefty Framber Valdez (8-4, 2.64 ERA), named to the AL All-Star team.

MLB Prop Pick: Ohtani Under 0.5 Hits (+139) at BetOnline

Astros Prop Bet: Framber Valdez

  • To Record A Win?
  • Over/Under 4.5 Hits Allowed

Framber Valdez actually has been much better on the road with a 1.76 ERA. Overall, Valdez has allowed 4 or fewer hits in six of his past eight starts.

Valdez almost surely will not have to deal with Trout tonight as the three-time MVP is expected to sit again, and he may not play until after the All-Star break with a back injury.

Also, since the start of June, the Angels are 6-1 when Ohtani starts on the mound and 6-26 when anybody else does.

Angels Prop Bet: Taylor Ward

  • Over/Under 0.5 Hits

I expect Valdez to win and dominate… except against Taylor Ward. He’s 6-for-13 career off Valdez

MLB Prop Pick: Ward Over 0.5 Hits (-197) at BetOnline
