Washington Nationals vs. Miami Marlins

Thursday, June 09, 2022 – 06:40 PM EDT at loanDepot Park

Stephen Strasburg vs. Trevor Rogers

  • Who Has Most Strikeouts?

Strasburg Analysis

We had a few MLB picks from this matchup on Wednesday and hit on over 5.5 strikeouts at -113 on Marlins starting pitcher Sandy Alcantara.

We also SHOULD have won on Alcantara at +105 to record a victory as he went nine scoreless innings … and still didn’t get the win because Miami also didn’t score so it went 10 innings. Naturally, the Marlins then won the game for their relief pitcher. Aggravating!

This big news around MLB today is the return to the mound of three-time All-Star and former World Series MVP Stephen Strasburg for the Nationals.

  • No question that when the former No. 1 overall pick is healthy that he’s among the best pitchers in the majors.
  • His last full season was in 2019 when he was 18-6 with a 3.32 ERA and 251 strikeouts over 209.0 innings.
  • Strasburg then had a postseason for the ages, going 5-0 (tying a record for most wins by a pitcher in one postseason) with a 1.98 ERA, 0.94 WHIP, and 47 strikeouts in 36.1 innings on the way to leading the Nationals to their lone World Series title and winning Series MVP honors.
  • Strasburg was in the midst of a huge contract then but smartly took an opt-out because he had all the leverage.

Strasburg Injury

The Nats stupidly then signed him to the richest contract ever for a pitcher (since passed a few times) even though Strasburg had been very injury-prone in his career.

Since signing that $245 million deal, he has pitched a total of 26.2 innings over the past two seasons and had a very risky surgery last summer for thoracic outlet syndrome.

The history of pitchers returning 100 percent from that is much less than returning from Tommy John surgery (which Strasburg also had early in his career).

Strasburg did look good in three minor-league rehab assignments and Nats manager Dave Martinez said he will have no limitations today, but I don’t buy that whatsoever. No way they let Strasburg throw more than, say, 70 pitches.

Rogers Analysis

Thus, we have to go with Rogers on the strikeout prop simply as the lefty should be out there longer. The 2021 NL Rookie of the Year runner-up has been a bit uneven this year at 2-5 with a 5.80 ERA and 39 strikeouts in 10 starts.

He had four Ks in a win at Washington on May 28. Four strikeouts might be enough to win this prop.

MLB Pick: Rogers with more strikeouts (-145) with BetOnline (visit our BetOnline Review

Juan Soto

  • Over/Under 0.5 Runs Scored

Rogers is an ugly 1-3 with a 10.57 ERA at home in four starts, so we’ll go with Washington’s best player, Juan Soto, to at least score a run in this one. He is 2-for-7 with four walks career off Rogers.

MLB Pick: Soto over 0.5 runs (+105) with BetOnline

New York Yankees vs. Minnesota Twins

Thursday, June 09, 2022 – 07:40 PM EDT at Target Field

Gerrit Cole

  • To Have 7+ Strikeouts and Yankees To Win

The Twins surprisingly dominated a Yankees Cy Young contender on Wednesday in Nestor Cortes, but I simply don’t see that happening against Gerrit Cole tonight in the series finale.

Cole (5-1, 2.78 ERA, 91 strikeouts) will have an occasional bad game but over his past two has allowed just four hits and one run over 13 innings with 19 strikeouts.

The right-hander has struck out at least nine in five of his past six.

Cole Strike Out

Cole is always going to strike out a lot of guys not simply because his stuff is nasty but he goes deep into games: At least six innings in eight straight.

MLB Pick: Cole with at least 7 strikeouts and Yankees win (-164) with BetOnline

Dylan Bundy

  • Over/Under 2.5 Earned Runs

On the flip side, Twins right-hander Dylan Bundy (3-3, 5.57) has turned into a pumpkin after a promising start to the season. He has allowed 14 runs and 17 hits over 8.1 innings in his past two.

Overall, the Twins have lost the past six times he has taken the mound. Bundy makes his 16th career appearance vs. the Yankees and is 2-6 with a 6.42 ERA over 61.2 innings. He hasn’t beaten New York since May 29, 2017.

MLB Pick: Bundy over 2.5 earned runs (-165) with BetOnline

Aaron Judge

  • At Least 2 Hits + Runs + RBIs

Aaron Judge had a four-game hitting streak snapped Wednesday but I like him to bounce back with at least an RBI single in this one as he’s 5-for-19 off Bundy with a double, three homers, and four RBIs.

I generally don’t recommend home run props. Judge is only +185 to hit one. Not really worth it.

MLB Pick: Judge at least 2 hits + runs + RBIs (-228) with BetOnline
