A full slate around the MLB on Tuesday evening and two games will be on national TV:

  • Giants-Braves (TBS)
  • Cardinals-Brewers (Fox Sports 1)

For today’s player props we look at two NL Central divisional matchups, including one of the games above. All betting odds are via BetOnline (visit our BetOnline Review)

St. Louis Cardinals vs. Milwaukee Brewers

Tuesday, June 21, 2022 – 08:10 PM EDT at American Family Field

Paul Goldschmidt

  • Over 2.5 Hits + Runs + RBIs

It’s a total coincidence that my props today come from a pair of NL Central matchups.

It will be quite the change for the Cardinals hitters. On Monday, they had to face one of the nastiest guys in the sport in Brewers right-hander Corbin Burnes. Milwaukee's ace is the reigning NL Cy Young Award winner and among the betting favorites this year. St. Louis was blanked on three hits.

Frankly, I could see Paul Goldschmidt getting three hits himself tonight. After all, he's going against, easily, the worst starting pitcher on the mound among the 30 across MLB in Chi Chi Gonzalez. The veteran journeyman was recently claimed off waivers from the Twins.

Goldschmidt Profiles Nicely Against Gonzalez

The 30-year-old had allowed six runs and 12 hits in seven innings with Minnesota. He now has a 9-23 record and 5.69 ERA in his big-league career (also with Texas and Colorado).

Goldschmidt had a seven-game hitting streak snapped Monday but is still batting .306 with five homers and 15 RBIs this month. He’s 4-for-11 with a homer and four RBIs career off Gonzalez. I don’t really believe in home run props, but Goldy is +250 for one tonight.

MLB Prop Pick: Paul Goldschmidt Over 2.5 Hits + Runs + RBIs (-129) at BetOnline

Jack Flaherty

  • Over/Under 4.5 Strikeouts

It's Jack Flaherty on the mound for the Cardinals. If he were at normal health/stretched out, leaning over 4.5 strikeouts would be easy here. However, he only made his season debut off an injury last Wednesday vs. Pittsburgh.

He was limited to 60 pitches with three strikeouts. He’ll be limited to about 70-75 tonight, so I think the under is the right play here.

Chicago Cubs vs. Pittsburgh Pirates

Tuesday, June 21, 2022 - 07:05 PM EDT at PNC Park

Oneil Cruz

  • Over 1.5 Hits + Runs + RBIs

The Pittsburgh Pirates aren’t good but their potentially bright future will be on display tonight with two rookies.

Shortstop Oneil Cruz made his season debut on Monday (he played in two games late last season but is still a rookie) and showed why he’s an NL Rookie of the Year candidate already. On Monday night he finished with three hits and four RBIs.

Even more impressive:

  • His double had an exit velocity of 112.9 mph.
  • His throw to first base on a groundout was clocked at 96.7 mph.
  • His sprint speed registered as high as 31.5 feet/second while running the bases.

All are among the highest marks by a Pirates player since the MLB Statcast era began in 2015. The dude is a five-tool stud.

Rookie Power

“Guy’s unreal,” said rookie outfielder Bligh Madris. “He has tools that come around once every 100 years. He’s special, to say the least. He can do things with the bat. He can hit pitches out of the ballpark that some guys are lucky to get out of the infield. It’s unbelievable being able to see what he can do.”

Madris, incidentally, made his MLB debut on Monday and was 3-for-4 with two RBIs and a double. We’ll deal with him another time.

Normally, I wouldn’t go back to Cruz so quickly because MLB pitchers adjust to rookies, but he’s facing a struggling Cubs rookie in Matt Swarmer (1-2, 5.23). In his lone road start, Swarmer was shelled for six runs in five innings.

MLB Prop Pick: Oneil Cruz Over 1.5 Hits + Runs + RBIs (-239) at BetOnline

Roansy Contreras

  • Over 4.5 Strikeouts + Pirates To Win

Roansy Contreras is a 22-year-old rookie right-hander for the Bucs and is 1-1 with a 3.06 ERA in 32.1 innings this year. He hasn’t allowed an earned run in 13.2 home innings with 18 strikeouts. Cubs batters rank eighth in the MLB with 585 strikeouts.

The Bucs are winning this game, and I think Contreras can get to five Ks for our last MLB pick, even though he’s not a HUGE strikeout guy.
