Best MLB Player Prop Bets for July 28

The trade market may get red hot starting today as the New York Yankees made a fairly big deal Wednesday night by landing Andrew Benintendi from Kansas City.

Here are today’s player props with MLB odds from BetOnline (visit our BetOnline Review), one of BMR’s top-rated sportsbooks.

Tigers vs. Blue Jays: What You Should Know

A series opener between somewhat neighbors. Remember, players who are not vaccinated for COVID are not allowed to play games in Toronto. While the Cardinals early this week were missing their two best hitters in Nolan Arenado and Paul Goldschmidt, it appears the Tigers will only be down lefty reliever Andrew Chafin (2.64 ERA in 30.2 innings).

He may have played his final game in a Detroit uniform as Chafin is expected to be traded by Tuesday’s MLB Trade Deadline.

That I am listing three Blue Jays hitters obviously makes me think Toronto will have a strong offensive game after being held to one run Wednesday in a loss to the Cardinals. Detroit starts lefty Tyler Alexander, who is mediocre at 2-3 with a 4.05 ERA in 33.1 innings.

Blue Jays Prop Picks

Vladimir Guerrero Jr. - At Least 2 Hits + Runs + RBIs

Jays star Vladimir Guerrero Jr. had two hits in Wednesday’s loss, his 26th multi-hit effort of the season. In an eight-game hitting streak, he’s batting .457 (16-for-35) with four doubles, a homer, and six RBIs (1.144 OPS).

Guerrero has hits in all but three of his 22 games this month, going 31-for-91 (.341) with eight doubles, three home runs, and 16 RBIs (.879 OPS). He is 1-for-7 with a homer career off Alexander.

Raimel Tapia - At Least 2 Total Bases

Raimel Tapia hasn’t faced Tyler Alexander but is on a seven-game hitting streak and batting .519 (14-for-27) over that stretch with two doubles, a triple, two homers, and 14 RBIs (1.407 OPS).

Lourdes Gurriel Jr. - Over/Under 1.5 Hits

Finally, Lourdes Gurriel Jr. is 3-for-6 career off Alexander with a double.

Gurriel is hitting .408 this month with a homer, five doubles, and eight RBIs.

Yusei Kikuchi - Over/Under 5.5 Strikeouts

On the mound, the Jays will activate lefty Yusei Kikuchi (3-5, 5.12 ERA) from the injured list to make his first MLB start since July 5 when he was roughed up in Oakland.

Kikuchi is not a huge strikeout pitcher and has gone Under 5.5 in five of his past six. Because he’s fresh off the IL, he probably won’t be out there more than five innings.

Texas Rangers vs. Los Angeles Angels

Thursday, July 28, 2022 – 09:38 PM EDT at Angel Stadium

Rangers vs. Angels: What You Should Know

The cursed Angels got more bad news Wednesday when it was revealed that three-time AL MVP Mike Trout has a "rare" spinal condition called costovertebral dysfunction that could affect him for the rest of his career.

Trout has assured fans that he will be back this season – he hasn’t played since July 12 due to back spasms/rib cage inflammation. I don’t see any reason why the Angels would even let Trout return this year as it’s another losing campaign.

Angels Prop Pick

Shohei Ohtani - Over/Under 8.5 Strikeouts - Over/Under 1.5 Earned Runs Allowed

There has been some scuttlebutt that the Halos are at least listening to trade offers – the Mets were among teams that called Los Angeles – for dual-threat star Shohei Ohtani because he will be a free agent after next season and will command perhaps $50 million per season. Can the Angels afford him, Trout, and Anthony Rendon? That will be tough.

Do I think Ohtani gets dealt by next week? Nope. His popularity alone is worth keeping Ohtani around to help sell seats and for marketing reasons.

It's well known that if you follow me here that I back Ohtani whenever he’s on the mound as he is tonight in this series opener. Ohtani (9-5, 2.80 ERA, 134 Ks) was rolling along again last Friday in Atlanta but gave up six runs in the seventh inning.

Prior to that inning, he had pitched to a 0.39 ERA across his previous 45.2 innings (two earned runs). Ohtani struck out 11, his fifth straight starts with double digits. Ohtani has joined Nolan Ryan as the only pitchers in Angels history to record at least 10Ks in five consecutive pitching appearances. Ryan had an Angels record seven-game streak in 1977 and a six-game streak spanning 1972-73.

Rangers Prop Pick

Jonah Heim - Over/Under 0.5 Total Bases

Because we don’t expect an Ohtani no-hitter, we do like one Rangers hitter tonight for our MLB pick, in catcher/DH Jonah Heim.

He is 5-for-11 career off Ohtani with a double, homer, and seven RBIs.
