It’s a full slate plus one Tuesday around the major leagues as the White Sox and Guardians play a doubleheader in Cleveland.

Here are today’s picks and player props with MLB odds from one of our top-rated sportsbooks.

New York Mets vs. Atlanta Braves

Mets vs. Braves: What You Should Know

Atlanta had a chance to close within a half-game of the National League East Division lead on Monday by beating New York, but Mets starter Max Scherzer was dominant in his 7 innings as New York won 4-1 to open a 2.5-game edge. We actually won on under 5.5 hits allowed by Braves pitcher Max Fried.

The lefty wasn’t especially sharp with 5 walks and 2 runs allowed in 5 innings, but he did allow only 5 hits – we got lucky he wasn’t brought out for the sixth inning or a sixth hit was likely.

I thought the Braves had a good chance of winning Monday even against Scherzer because Fried had been so good of late and New York was without two All-Stars in infielder Jeff McNeil and outfielder Starling Marte plus catcher James McCann. Marte and McCann are hurt, with the latter now on the injured list. McNeil is on the paternity list. I don’t think any of those guys will return tonight (obviously McCann won’t).

Braves Prop Bet: Spencer Strider

I like surprising Braves rookie Spencer Strider to continue his impressive recent strikeout surge —he’s now the +210 favorite at BMR’s top-rated books to win NL Rookie of the Year. The 23-year-old right-hander is 4-2 with a 2.60 ERA and 102 strikeouts in just 65.2 innings.

Last time out vs. St. Louis, he finished with a career-high 12 strikeouts in 6 innings and recorded a strikeout for each of the first 9 outs, the first time that's happened since the Braves debuted in Atlanta in 1966.

Strider has 3 double-digit strikeout games in his past five and the Mets haven’t seen him, so that should benefit Strider and his strikeout chances at least the first time through the lineup just like it did vs. the Cardinals.

MLB Prop Pick: Spencer Strider Over 6.5 Strikeouts (-165) at BetOnline (visit our BetOnline Review)

Braves Prop Bet: Austin Riley

Lefty David Peterson (5-1, 3.48 ERA) goes for the Mets. That could mean a big night for Braves third baseman Austin Riley, who accounted for the only run Monday with a solo homer.

He’s up to .282 on the season with 24 homers and is 5-for-10 with 3 doubles career vs. Peterson.

Braves Prop Bet: Marcell Ozuna

One Braves batter who hasn’t had success career off Peterson is Marcell Ozuna, who is 0-for-10 with 4 strikeouts.

He did have a double Monday but struck out twice and is batting only .228 on the year so I’m confident he will go hitless tonight, and we get a good price.

MLB Prop Pick: Marcell Ozuna Under 0.5 Hits (+155) at BetOnline

Boston Red Sox vs. Tampa Bay Rays

Tuesday, July 12, 2022 – 07:10 PM EDT at Tropicana Field

Red Sox vs. Rays: What You Should Know

One of the big storylines today is the return of perennial Cy Young candidate Chris Sale to the Red Sox rotation. The Sox gave him a $145 million extension before the 2019 season and it’s fair to say that hasn’t worked out as Sale missed the entire 2020 season due to Tommy John surgery and made only nine starts last year recovering from it.

A rib injury hit Sale this spring and then he had another undisclosed issue – the southpaw finally will return to the majors tonight, not far from where he grew up in Lakeland, Fla.

In his final rehab start at Triple-A Worcester, Sale was very wild with five walks in just 3.2 innings (only 42 strikes on 72 pitches) and then he went on a destructive rampage in the clubhouse that included breaking a TV that Sale eventually paid to replace. He was caught on videotape doing all this and didn’t really even apologize, simply saying he’s an intense dude who wants to do well.

Red Sox Prop Bet: Chris Sale

It’s easy to see Sale a bit amped up tonight and his control being off. He will have a pitch count of around 85, and I think at least two Rays can walk against him. The scouting report will be that Sale’s control isn’t fully back yet so the Tampa batters should be patient.

Sale allowed 5 runs in just one inning of a 2021 ALDS game against the Rays at Tropicana Field.

Red Sox Prop Bet: J.D. Martinez

For what it’s worth, All-Star third baseman Rafael Devers also is likely to return for the Red Sox on Tuesday after missing three starts because of back discomfort.

However, I like Boston’s J.D. Martinez for a hitting prop. During a four-game hitting streak, he’s 6-for-17 with 3 doubles and 4 RBIs.

Martinez only has 9 homers but is tied for the AL lead with 29 doubles. He is 9-for-34 with 2 doubles and 2 homers career off Rays starting pitcher Corey Kluber (4-5, 3.62 ERA).
