As usual, a bit lighter schedule is around MLB on Thursday with a handful of matinees. We do get AL Cy Young’s favorite Justin Verlander on the mound.

Here are today’s player props with MLB odds from BetOnline (visit our BetOnline Review), one of BMR’s top-rated sportsbooks.

Houston Astros vs. Cleveland Guardians

Thursday, August 04, 2022 – 07:10 PM EDT at Progressive Field

What You Should Know

This could be a preview of the American League Division Series, although Cleveland, if it makes the playoffs, would have to get through the Wild-Card Series.

Houston is going to be one of the top two seeds and get a bye into the ALDS under the new playoff format.

Astros' Prop Bet: Justin Verlander

  • Over/Under 2.5 Earned Runs Allowed
  • To Record A Win?

Only 10 pitchers have won at least three Cy Young Awards and they either are in the Hall of Fame or will be (Clayton Kershaw, Max Scherzer). Houston’s Justin Verlander has the most seasons separating his first (2011 – with Tigers) and second (2019 – with Astros) Cy Young Award.

The 39-year-old right-hander is currently the +145 favorite at the top-rated sportsbooks to win Cy Young No. 3 this season, and it’s almost surely going to be him, Tampa Bay’s Shane McClanahan (+190), or the White Sox’s Dylan Cease (+475).

Verlander leads the majors with 14 wins and a 1.81 ERA while ranking second in WHIP (0.87) and opponent OPS (.532). He’s not quite the strikeout machine he used to be with 122 in 124 innings as at his age, he’s letting his defense help more.

Since June 7, he has allowed one earned run or less in eight of his past nine starts, going 8-1 in that span with a 1.37 ERA. I think it’s a gift the books are giving us 2.5 earned runs allowed instead of 1.5. He is opposed by a struggling Zach Plesac (2-9, 4.33 ERA) so I fully expect a Houston victory.

Astros' Prop Bet: Jose Altuve

  • Over/Under 0.5 Runs Scored

Houston's second baseman and leadoff hitter Jose Altuve tonight is 3-for-5 career off Plesac with a walk.

The best value is for Altuve to simply score a run as we don’t have to care how he gets on base.

Guardians' Prop Bet: Jose Ramirez

  • Over/Under 1.5 Total Bases

There is one Cleveland batter we like tonight, and that’s All-Star third baseman Jose Ramirez, who leads the AL with 86 RBIs.

Ramirez is 11-for-30 with 3 doubles and 2 homers career off Verlander. Even the best pitchers have guys who hit them hard.

Atlanta Braves vs. New York Mets

Thursday, August 04, 2022 – 07:10 PM EDT at Citi Field

What You Should Know

This is clearly the biggest series of the weekend and it’s a five-game set – if the Mets somehow were to sweep it (fairly unlikely but not impossible), the NL East race would be over as New York currently leads by three games.

Mets' Prop Bet: Jeff McNeil

  • Over/Under 0.5 Hits

Two good pitchers in tonight’s opener in the Braves’ Kyle Wright (13-4, 2.93), who has been one of the biggest surprises in the National League), and the Mets’ Carlos Carrasco (11-4, 3.79). He hasn’t allowed a run in his past three starts spanning 18.2 innings.

However, both have at least one player on the opposing side who gives them fits. For Wright, it’s Mets All-Star infielder Jeff McNeil as he’s 7-for-12 with 2 doubles and 3 RBIs career against him.

McNeil has broken out of a slump in a big way of late with a six-game hitting streak and multiple hits in four of the six to raise his average from .287 to .302. A McNeill hit prop is pricy, but you can use it as part of a parlay.

Braves' Prop Bet: Matt Olson

  • Over/Under 1.5 Total Bases

For Carrasco, it’s Matt Olson as he’s 5-for-8 with 2 doubles and 2 homers career. I don’t really do home run props for MLB picks, but Olson is +250 to hit one.
