A long weekend series in Seattle between the Mariners and Oakland Athletics continues on Saturday’s sports betting card as both clubs chase the Houston Astros in the AL West.
Oakland Athletics vs. Seattle Mariners
Saturday, July 24, 2021 – 10:10 PM EDT at T-Mobile Park
Oakland got started on the right side of the MLB scores with a 4-1 decision Thursday night in Seattle. Athletics southpaw Sean Manaea mastered the Mariners with 13 strikeouts over seven frames, Ramon Laureano driving in half of Oakland’s runs. The victory was the third in a row for the A’s over the Mariners this season, leaving Oakland with a slight 4-3 edge in 2021. The final stayed comfortably ‘under’ a 7½-run total, leaving that column split 2-2 O/U in games at T-Mobile Park heading into Friday’s matchup.
Toeing the rubber on Saturday will be Chris Bassitt (10-3, 3.31) for Oakland opposite Seattle’s Logan Gilbert (4-2, 3.50). Online betting sites have favored the A’s in every meeting between the two this season, and will again on for the third game of the set with the total sitting 7½-8 once numbers are released.
A’s Hurlers Fourth in Al With 3.69 Era
In addition to Thursday’s outcome marking Oakland’s third consecutive win over the Mariners, it was also helped the A’s to a three-game win streak overall heading into Game 2. Pitching has been behind Oakland also dragging a fifth-game ‘under’ run into Friday’s skirmish.
Consistency has been Bassitt’s calling card this year, 13 of his 20 assignments going into the quality start column and nine of his last 14 starts lasting seven innings or more. He rebounded from a shelling by the Astros in Houston to begin July by working seven in his two subsequent assignments, allowing four runs total. Three of those four runs came last Sunday in a home loss to the Indians, the 4-2 setback coming with the A’s -165 chalk on the MLB betting odds.
Bassitt faced the Mariners in Seattle to begin June, one of his few poor efforts that saw the former Akron Zip allow four runs in as many innings. Oakland batters bailed him out of that one in a 12-6 final, his only start against the Mariners this year. He won both assignments against Seattle a season ago, Bassitt tossing a combined 12.2 IP with just a single plate crossing charged to his ledger.
Astros Follow A’s Into Seattle on Key Homestand
Hats off to the Mariners for still being a factor in the AL West race, Seattle actually sitting closer to the division lead than the big, bad New York Yankees in the AL East. If Seattle is going to remain a playoff contender, however, it will have to prove it this weekend against Oakland and next week when Houston arrives for a three-game series.
While they haven’t all been pretty, the bottom line is Seattle has won Gilbert’s last nine trips to the mound, leaving bettors playing the Mariners in his 11 starts ahead more than 10 units. He really opened his eyes in his final start before the all-star break by one-hitting the Yankees over seven scoreless innings, then pitched into the sixth last Sunday in Anaheim for a 7-4 triumph. Seattle was a +125 underdog at BetOnline (visit our BetOnline Review) in the win over the Angels, Gilbert striking out a career-high nine in the effort.
Gilbert’s nine-start win streak started with consecutive triumphs against the A’s back in late May. The former first-round pick in 2018 out of Stetson didn’t decide in either tilt, pitching 10 innings total and allowing four earned runs. Gilbert has been a little better on the road where he owns a 2.35 ERA across five starts than at T-Mobile Park where his ERA is 4.35 in six assignments.
Umpire Notes, Final Thoughts and Free Pick
Nestor Ceja is currently filling on for Marty Foster on Sam Holbrook’s crew, and the second-year umpire will be calling balls and strikes for just the 15th time at the big league level. The 34-year-old rover has shown a strong lean to the ‘over’ this season with nine of his 11 plate assignments skipping past the marks, including a perfect 5-0 O/U record when the totals are set at nine runs or lower.
Clear skies and temps in the mid-70s should have the roof open at T-Mobile Park for Saturday’s contest. A 7-10 mph northerly breeze (in from left) is also in the mix. At least it will be an enjoyable evening for the fans in attendance, though most of them will go home disappointed in the Mariners with my free MLB pick on Oakland.
