The red-hot Boston Red Sox come home from a long western swing to begin a big homestand, and we have a free MLB pick for their series opener with the Oakland Athletics on Tuesday.

June has been a very, very good month so far for Boston, and even though their excellent play hasn’t led to them closing the gap on the AL East-leading New York Yankees, the Red Sox will try to keep piling up the wins.

Oakland Athletics vs. Boston Red Sox

Tuesday, June 14, 2022 – 07:10 PM EDT at Fenway Park

Athletics vs. Red Sox: Today's Pitchers

  • Boston recently lost ace Nathan Eovaldi to the injured list with a back injury, and will now turn to Nick Pivetta (5-5, 3.78) to help pick up the slack.
  • Oakland will start with rookie Jared Koenig (0-1, 9.00).

Rivalry Trends

Boston is returning home from a very successful road trip that began in Oakland where the Red Sox swept the Athletics, two of the three Red Sox wins coming as road favorites at the top-rated sportsbooks while outscoring the A’s 20-4.

  • The broom job in Oakland gave Boston a 4-game win streak in the rivalry.
  • The Red Sox have won six of the last seven to build a 1,087-892 advantage in the all-time series.
  • Two of the three games earlier this month in Oakland pushed totals.
  • Last season’s set at Fenway Park ran 0-2-1 O/U/P on the scoreboard.
  • Oakland won two of the three games in Boston a year ago.

Jared Koenig: Pitcher Analysis

This will be just the second big-league starting assignment for Koenig, and he’s hoping to post better results than the first one last week in Atlanta where the Braves ran roughshod over the A’s to the tune of a 13-2 rout on a huge -242 moneyline at BetOnline (visit our BetOnline Review).

Koenig only allowed the first 4 Braves' runs in that contest, needing 76 pitches to get through four frames before turning in over to the Oakland bullpen that three gasoline on the fire by serving up 4 homers to Atlanta.

Koenig had been toiling in the minors since 2017 before getting the call up to the bigs a little more than a week ago. The southpaw was 4-2 with a 2.21 ERA in eight starts and a relief outing for Triple-A Las Vegas prior to his major league debut.

Nick Pivetta: Pitcher Analysis

Boston went 8-2 on the road trip that took the Red Sox through Oakland, Anaheim, and Seattle, and one of the two losses was hung on Pivetta this past Thursday when Shohei Ohtani and the Angels trumped him in a 5-2 final that came with the Halos closing -130 on the MLB odds.

One of the eight Boston wins on the trip was also credited to Pivetta in a very clean performance against the Athletics, who the Red Sox right-hander held to just 2 hits while striking out 7 over 7 innings in an 8-0 final.

The loss in Anaheim last week snapped a 5-game win streak for Pivetta which came after the Red Sox lost his first five starts of the season. Pivetta is 2-2 with a 3.67 ERA in five starts at Fenway Park.

Athletics vs. Red Sox: Weather Report

It’s going to be great weather for the matchup.

The final hour of sunlight for the day greets the start of the contest, with a first-pitch reading of 79° on the thermometer and a light 5-8 mph NNW breeze (left to right) throughout much of the evening.

MLB Betting Pick for Today

It has been a total freefall for the Athletics these last few weeks with just two wins in their last 16 games, 10 of the defeats coming consecutively to leave Oakland just ahead of Kansas City for honors as the worst team in the American League.

Boston, meanwhile, has been heading up the ranks since the middle of May with victories in 18 of the last 25, though the Red Sox have to feel like they’re just spinning their wheels with only a fourth-place ranking in the AL East to show for their effort.

With Koenig’s fastball mediocre at best and not one single pitch in his arsenal that can be described as nasty or tough for major league hitters to handle, Boston’s lineup should be able to generate enough offense tonight to cover a run-line play. Red Sox win, 6-3.
