A rematch of the 2017 and 2019 ALCS is part of Thursday’s sports betting calendar, and we wouldn’t dare miss the opportunity to preview the collision between the Houston Astros and New York Yankees.

After hosting one New York team down in Houston earlier this week, the Astros now travel to the Empire State where they begin a road trip against both Big Apple teams that begins with a 4-game series against the Yankees in what should provide heavy action at the best sportsbooks and betting sites all weekend.

Astros vs. Yankees: Today's Pitchers

Some very tasty pitching matchups in all four games will help attract baseball bettors, though we won’t get the one we’d really like to see: Justin Verlander, who lines up for Houston on Friday, against Gerrit Cole, who is penciled on Saturday for New York.

The lid-lifter on Thursday night pits Framber Valdez (7-3, 2.78) for the Astros opposite Jameson Taillon (8-1, 2.70) for the Yankees, and it’s New York showing up as -120 chalk on the MLB odds with 8½ for the total.

Current Standings

  • Combatants in the postseason three times in the last seven years, current MLB futures odds suggest a fourth playoff series between Houston and New York.
  • The Astros are leading the AL West by 10 games
  • The Yankees are up by an even dozen in the AL East.

As interleague opponents and through Houston’s first year in the American League in 2013, New York thoroughly dominated the Astros by winning 13 of the 15 matchups, a domination that has leveled off with Houston 28-26 since the start of the 2015 schedule.

  • The Yankees won the season series in 2021 and took two of three in New York.
  • Two of the games last year in New York went ‘Over’ the totals with the third pushing a 9-run mark.
  • The Astros have won all three playoff matchups with the Yankees, beginning with the 2015 AL Wild Card Game.

Framber Valdez: Pitcher Analysis

One mistake pitch to AJ Pollock his last time out had Valdez locked in a 3-3 game with the White Sox. Then his lineup let him relax a little by plating 10 runs in one inning to bust Chicago by a 13-3 count. The result was Houston’s seventh win in Valdez’s last eight starts.

The baseball odds closed with Valdez and Houston -160 chalk in that contest, his eighth consecutive assignment to be favored, and the final went ‘Over’ the total for the third time in five appearances after the ‘Under’ cashed in seven of his first eight starts.

Valdez faced the Yankees once in 2021 and took a no-decision in an 8-7 Houston win at home. Thursday will be his first start at Yankee Stadium since 2019, a game Valdez lost by allowing 5 runs in 3.1 innings. He is 4-1 with a 1.61 ERA in seven road starts this year.

Jameson Taillon: Pitcher Analysis

With a baker’s dozen of starts under his belt, Taillon is proving to be one of the most profitable pitchers to follow at top-rated sportsbooks with the Yankees going 11-2 and bettors up nearly 9 units when he takes the mound.

Taillon was being necessarily real sharp in his first two June outings. The 30-year-old was charged with 7 runs over 9 innings against the Twins and Cubs, but the Yankees lineup scored 28. He rebounded with a shutout ball into the sixth last week in Toronto where New York posted a 4-0 decision.

Taillon opposed Valdez in Houston last season, also earning a no-decision thanks to New York relievers coughing a big lead-up in the ninth. The Yankees have won five of his seven home assignments this season, Taillon pitching to a 2.70 ERA (40 IP).

Astros vs. Yankees: Weather Report

There is a slight chance of a shower or two in the NYC area during the day, but those chances are gone by the evening when cloudy skies and a 70° temp greet the start of the game, along with a light easterly breeze (in from center).

MLB Betting Pick for Today

Both teams were on the winning side of the MLB scoreboard on Wednesday, the Astros completing a mini-sweep of the Mets in Houston while the Yankees won their series finale at Tampa Bay.

This is a very fair price on a New York team that is head-&-shoulders above everyone else this season, and the pinstripes will be my free MLB pick in a 5-3 final.
